What to ask for selling a 96

So with the news of a baby on the way and only having scooters and an access cab Tacoma, we're forced to sell the Taco and get a more family friendly ride.

Now the thing is, what do we ask price-wise...

Checking CL, the closest thing to our truck is one at a dealer for $7k with a little less miles. Everything else is either single cab, 2wd or high mileage. There's one that looks almost like ours, it's a 99, asking $6k and it's got 200k on the clock.

Ideally we'd like to get around $5k for ours. It's got new front brakes and brand new Bilstein 5100s all around.

Mechanically: Horn doesn't work, a tear in the drivers seat where you slide in, small cigarette type hole in headliner, Vbelts need replaced (which we have just haven't installed) and the heat for some reason sounds like it's got some crap bouncing around in there. Happens when you use the heat or AC.

It's got 31" muddish tires on it with really good tread still. Few minor dents and scratches here and there (hasn't been a mall crawler)

Would be willing to travel to meet for a serious buyer. Should we start out higher than $5k and go no less than that?

 

Around here you could get alot more, like 6500 to 7000 depending on how the body is

 

Around my state, $4500-5000 looks about right.

Being in ID, check out http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=443 for prices (mostly in Utah). Should be pretty close to the same as your state.

 

Just a datapoint for you... I bought my '96 LX Access Cab, 5-sp, 4x4, 210k for $3800, with a new clutch, new tires and new belts (including timing). Interior and exterior was pretty rough, though nothing outright damaged, just dinged up and scratched up. Feel like I got a great deal on it.

I would probably pay $5000 for yours, but probably not much more than that. However, in some areas tacomas aren't very common and command higher prices. You might start at $6k and see what happens.

As always with auto sales, take care of the little annoying things first - people will pay more for a car that needs a timing belt replaced than they will for a car with one headlight out, even when fully informed (which you should always do), just because one thing seems abstract, and the other is bugging you on the test drive. Fix the blower (may need replacement blower, or may just have a dead mouse rattling around in it), give it a good cleaning inside and out, and deal with any other little random issues so that the test drives go perfectly.

and got to thinking... i'd check my own out.

Upon taking it out I found a nice surprise, no dead rat... but...

 

Nice, that easy fix will add a few bucks to the sale price.

Ya lol. Glad it wasn't something huge that needed replaced.

Even fixed it where we can unlock the driver side door with they key =)

Now just gotta figure out the stupid horn and replace the belts

 

You could get 6k easy for the truck in Florida.

 

i bought my 96 v6 5spd 4x4 with 3in lift and wheels and tires 189k for 4700.

 

That happened to my 2002 several times. Once one of the mice got out when I pulled the blower and hid in the cab. Put out one of those sticky traps and caught the little bugger.
I stuffed some stainless steel wool (Marine Supply House) in the area of the hood hinges and that keep them out of the blower.
