Hopefully this helps. It is the slip that is in the visor for my 2003 double cab.

In most cases, Toyota doesn't put ot on our truck unless it is the best... why we keep buying Toyotas.

Some old schooltypes are affraid of technology. The ADD (automatic differential disconnect) that allows us to shift on the fly and not have to lock hubs) must scare the pants off of them... Automatic locking Warn hubs is probably too much for them to handle (my dad had them installed on his '65 Wagoneer). You had to drive in reverse for them to unlock after four wheeling, is all. The ADD is great, and with three Tacomas (250,000 miles) all having it, and no problems, I don't get the fear.

A-TRAC must send them to the moon!!!

I just move the lever to 4 H its all linkage as far as I can tell. Didn't see any wires going to the front Diff the last time I had the Skid plate off.

what?? what do you have it in the rest of the time?

that level should always be in "4H"....there's a push button on the driver side that you push to get 4x4

Maybe the automatics had the button on the lever and the manuals were lever only? I had an '01 automatic, like the OP... The button engaged the transfer case (and ADD) into H4... then the lever was moved to get into L4.

Nope. I have test-driven 01 5-speeds that had the button (straight shift pattern) and the non-button (J-shift pattern) transfer case shifters. Mine is the latter. Some trucks got one type of shifter, and others the other, and I have not been able to determine why this is so, but I haven't tried hard either, because I don't care. Probably some production quirk.

When its not in 4 wheel drive ( 4 H ) its in H2 2 wheel drive hell there's only 3 options to pick from and 2 of those are 4 wheel drive!

I just read through this thread and it really threw me for a loop, I guess we all just assumed that our own method of 4WD was also everyone else's method. I checked just my manual and sure enough, it has instructions for both types of options.

I have the J-Shift 4WD in my 03, and never even really noticed that there was another option. The OP has a Limited, perhaps they received the Push Button Straight Shift 4WD in addition to their body colored fender flares and bumpers?!?! Does that seem to be a possible answer to this mystery?

Weird... I had a 2001 Off Road TRD automatic... and it had the stick with the button. That is here in Southern California. I don't recall an option called a 'Limited', it was SR5 or TRD above the base truck. TRDs were also SR5s and they were only Off Roads (no 'Sport' until '05). It could be a Canada Tacoma thing? But, for sure, my automatic V-6 4WD TRD had the button on the side of the transfer case lever.
