I got the call this morning: my frame is needing a replacement. There is a 5 inch whole in one side, and a patched 7 inch whole on the other. The dealership is willing to do the frame swap ($10k) but they are waiting to hear back from corporate before they order or do anything. They are wondering why the dealership that had the truck before them didn't do it.

At first I was pretty upset, thinking about horror stories and whatnot. ruined my whole day. Now after a little more digging, i'm wondering to myself, did I hit the jackpot? A whole bunch of new parts for free (hopefully), and from what I hear around the forum, installation of any replacement parts at the dealership with no labor cost!

I'm thinking of replacing the muffler (free replacements for the rest of the vehicles life? yes please), fuel filter, shocks, and water pump (I don't think it was replaced when the timing belt was done).

Is there any other work you guys would recommend I get done? It's 2001 double cab 4x4, just rolled over 150k miles.

Is there any parts you would recommend I get replaced?

I've read a lot of posts regarding this frame swap business. Is this something that's more prone to happen in Northern states where road salting occurs ? I'm in Texas, no salt, not a lot a rain in general. I've looked at mine in the easy spots to look and to me, looks as fine as any other vehicle. Is there a particular area I should pay attention to looking closely at ?

same thing happened to me, sept 8th I dropped it off to get the frame sprayed, I got the call that it failed the frame inspection, so I have had a 2011 camry since the 8th of sept.

I was told 6-7 weeks for the frame to get to the dealer, but what I think they did is wait to order frames till they have at leaste 4 trucks, I went by last sunday and my truck is still waiting for the frame and there was about 5 other trucks there also.

My truck will be the first one they have done (fairly new dealership).

He told me 4 weeks: 1 week or more for parts, one guy working on it so 7 good hours of work from said guy a day is over a week (he gets 60 hours).

We are still waiting for the ok from corporate. =(

A 2001 with over 150k and they're saying frame swap? Hmm. You'd think corporate would do a buyback on this one.

Yes the frame recall is only for the rust belt states. And the frame rust from the inside out. So just keep your frame clean and fix any rust spots that you may heave/get and you will be golden.:D

And to the OP good news to you! Hope it works out great.;)

I heard Toyota was buying ( and using ) used metal for those said Buy back trucks ,and that is why they rusted out ! What years are included in that buy back? 2000- 2005 ???

Read the sticky at the top of this forum!!

Buyback is 1995.5-2000 and frame replacement/undercoating is 2001-2004. 2005 Tacomas are 2ND GEN. The undercoating and replacement warranty only applies to trucks that have had their first inspection BEFORE the end of this month. After Oct 2010, no more trucks will be inspected. The buy back WILL still be applicable though as long as the truck is 15 years old or less.

Wait. .you're saying that after the initial inspection, they said you need the spray done? but then when you went in for the spray, they found holes in the frame? Makes no sense.. did they simply miss the wholes in the initial inspectioN?

It was originally inpsected in Feb 09, before I purchased it, I then have been waiting for the local dealer to have the necesary equimpment to apply the spray, when I finally made an appoinment for it they reinspected the frame and that is when it failed and I recieved the new frame.

When I brought it in initially, he didnt even look at it, he just said they'd spray the frame, because my vin fell under the recall. When I brought it in for the spray, they found the holes and called me the next day to say the frame will be replaced.

Why, there buyback offer is Kelly Blue and high miles don't count against it. Besides the buy back is for pre-'01's only. Toyota is a sleazy company and they have been making bad decisions since the 80's.

Hello paulie and welcome to the forums!

Please note that this thread is almost 2 years old, and that by you posting in it, its been pushed to the top, how you even found this is beyond me.

Also please note, its not a great idea to post your email everywhere (wadester10@hotmail.com)in your account as everyone will likely sign you up for EVERYTHING including but not limited to (porn, free ipads, actual ladies pads, more porn, spiritual messages, bevmo newsletter (were not barbarians!), more porn, mens enlargement pills, free cruises, factory warranty extensions from fake companies, and more!) This is because you called toyota a "sleazy company," not a good idea on a tacoma forum. Also by posting your email, we can seach facebook for you, and see that you are a treehugger, nothing to do with "measuring" :)

    Happy saturday!

    ^^I like this response

    Also nice ancient thread bump!

Toyota has only been making bad decisions in the past 8 years though (with the introduction of the 2nd get Tacoma and the new Tundra!...jk). In reality the frame 'recall' and replacement policies they adopted are some of the best things I have ever seen a large company do (and on such a large scale). Toyota seems to take care of its compact truck drivers well!

right... Toyota is a sleazy company that replaces rusty frames due to outside environmental issues free of cost to their customers when every other manufacturer would laugh them out of their dealership saying that its not their fault their state salts their roads.

Toyota should be ashamed that they back their products......
