I understand that you want to do this on the cheap, but have you looked into actually just getting em powder coated? I found a place 20 minutes from me that strips and coats them for 50 a piece, so its gonna be roughly the cost of one new tire to get all 5 done up. And the powder should last substantially longer than a rattle can job. My friend painted his 09 Civic's rims himself, and after less than a year (including the 7 months of not driving at all while we were on deployment) the paint and clear coat is already flaking off.

Im going to drop my new silver FJ TRD wheels off today with the company, because I wanted the Trail Teams look, without the TT price...

Ill look into that ^. Right now im trying to get an impression on how they will look. Im afraid they will look cheap and desperate (the stock wheels are not all that impressive). When I get back, Ill look into photo shopping.

stock rims and bigger tires (if thats the route you wanna go) usually looks pretty good in my opinion.

Ok, mine aren't stock wheels but the process should be the same. A good result is all in the prep work. Clean the wheels really well, and scuff the surface being painted. I used Rustoleum Automotive Primer, followed by 3 coats of Rustoleum Gloss Black, then finished it off with 4 coats of Rustoleum Clear Coat.

    Wheels before.....

You can't powder coat the plastic center caps, well you can but they will come out looking like a black bear turd. I was going to powder coat my rims but the guy here in town wants 50 each, plus I need to take the tires off. For 39 I can get new black steel rims.

i was checking out my flex, for my suspension, but here ya go on the wheels.

I sanded them down, used primer, then WHEEL SPRAY PAINT. Make sure you get the right wheel paint. Then I sprayed a clear coat over them to protect my wheel a bit. I have had a few nicks but overall its nice and I like it. A lot better then the stock look.

For those of you wanting a cheap powder coating job, go find a place that does things like shelving or fencing powder coating where they could just throw a wheel set in with whatever else they're doing.

I found a place that would do a set for $80 if I stripped the paint. Only had white, black or grey.

I'm thinking about doing mine, but I'm afraid black rims on a black truck will be too much. What do y'all think?

it wont be to much at all. you should see some of the murdered out tacomas (meaning everything is black) there are several on the site.

if you want start a thread asking for a photoshop job. there are several people that wouldnt mind photoshopping black wheels on your truck so you can see it before you do it. but i unfortunately am just not talented in the photoshop thing

No such thing, the murdered out look is the best IMO. Chrome is for old farts. :)
