Interesting that the 1G has a recall on them but they can tell by VIN if you need it or not...makes me wonder

Why is that interesting?? VIN identify a LOT of information about the truck. That can help to figure out which truck came from where and if there was a bad batch in one plant or during one specific time frame...They can weed out having to do the repairs on ALL the trucks.

Thats what I was thinking since it was 'free spinning'. Approx. $650 to fix that not including body work :(

I find it interesting that they used many different parts manufacturers on the same part. Say, using 2-3 manufacturers for Lower Ball Units, and then saying the LBUs are bad...oh, but not yours. Next thing you know, you are going done the highway at 65-70 and catastrophic failure happens because of the bad LBUs...but "your VIN didn't match the recall." Can you tell that to my injuries?

I am glad you are OK! What a scary thing to happen-you didn't smack something on that side anytime recently-or have any punks who wish you harm? Just eliminating stuff-

Can you take a pic of the other end of the lower ball joint? I just want to see where it broke at.

Yeah I saw his too. Mine fender is broken as well but its not messing a chunk out of it. Plus it damaged the fender pretty bad cause I cant open my door without major rubbing and metal bending.

Did the truck drive weird before the balljoint broke, or did it just pop out unexpectedly ? I think someone should make a thread on checking this stuff so it can be prevented. I don't know what or how to check it, but I'm going to look into it!

its part of the annual inspection in some states. if you do your own work its easy to check. Anytime i rotate my tires i yank and try to move susp. components around, you can check for play in ball joints be trying to move the control arms and look for any play. even tiny play is unacceptable. also odd tire wear and bad alignment is a sign. many times ball joints will clunk, particularly upper ball joints clunk around corners.

To the OP good luck! But to the others should we be concerned about our lower ball joints?

This same exact thing happend to my buddies 99 taco on the freeway. He was running 10" of lift and 36's though. And he did some pretty heavy offroading.
