    i want to wash my engine and engine bay, is there any thing i should cover? should i wash it with the engine on or off?

    I think it depends on how thoroughly you are going to wash it.

    I keep mine looking pretty good by going to the DIY carwash after any offroading. I leave the engine running, being sure to put the deck plate cover on, and have at it. I avoid spraying directly on the alternator but other than that, not particularly cautious.

    Its not like you have a distributor with points in it or a carburetor.
