Driving in the rain - Scary

I love my '98 4x4 but it is almost scary to drive in the rain. I have a hill in our neighborhood called "Snake Hill" by the locals. Getting up this hill in the rain is almost like trying to get up a hill in the snow. 3/4 of the way up the hill and the rear finally breaks loose and I do nothing but spin.

Rear end has broke loose on moderate turns and entry ramps.

I have 31 x 10.5 15 Cooper Discover ATR tires. What do you guys do to overcome the hazzards of driving in the rain?

 

Is this a paved road you can't get up in the rain? The Cooper's are great tires, I've got the same ones, are they in good shape? Otherwise, just use a light foot, once you start spinning, you lose a lot of traction. You're better off letting off and letting the tires catch.

 

Drop the air pressure a bit, and add some weight to the back.

 

Paved road, lot's of tread on the Coopers. Age may be a factor. Babying the throttle going up the hill doesn't seem to help.

It just seems that it takes an incredibly light foot not to slide even taking off on flat surfaces.

 

You can also put some sand bags in the bed

 

Ummm... are you putting it in 4WD??? That should do it... Next would be to add some weight in the back. If the paved roads are slippery like that, you have no problem using the 4WD... as long as slipping can occur... it is no different than snow, ice, mud as far as using 4WD.

 

How old are the tires? the compound hardens over time and even though there is tread left, the rubber won't grip nearly as well. Cooper tires have very good grip on the wet/snow, you shouldn't be having this issue. Did it just start recently or been getting worse? Might be a sign it's time for tires.

 

I want to see pictures of this road from hell.

 

x2 on the 4-wheel...give that a try. Besides tread, age of tire, and adding weight, how's your suspension? If it's old, it may not be keeping your tires sufficiently planted to the ground.

Mike use 4-hi-that's what it's for my '01 came originally with those BF goodrich knobby offroady tires-SCARY on the freeway in rain-I dumped tham and went with Michelin Xs with street tread and solved that little hazard. Having your front tires do some of the pulling will even up your traction

x2, this road must be insane! I have driven up to the Sandia crest (5k vertical feet in a pretty short amount of road so its pretty steep) in the winter with snow/ice and did fine in 2wd on bald pathfinder A/P's.

 

Hydroplaning in the rain at 180kmph. Thats scary

 

Guys, it's not that the road is that insane, but it is twisty and relatively steep which makes it hard to sustain any kind of speed or momentum in a Tacoma. Miata MX-5? No problem, and very fun. Taco? Not so much.

I've tried to find an online image but it is Avondale Road near the Old Mill in North Little Rock, AR if you want to explore Google Maps. I just went up and down the hill on street view.
