i'm not using the oem rack (which there are already threaded holes for), i have a thule, which clamps to the roof. there are pads on top of the rooff rails, and the hook/clamp part goes in where the door closes.

here's a picture of how it mounts

he's using a yakama rack. it clamps the same way as the picture i just posted of my thule. he has two "towers" (the clamp part) on each side, with cross bars running between them. he also has a third brace in the center. if you look closely you can see it. it has a little silver circle in the center. once you have that setup, you can mount anything you want up there. OEM, yakima, and thule will all work (if there is an oem for first gens). however, yakima and thule systems will be stronger than the oem setup.

i part time as a mechanic at a bike shop, and we sell a lot of roof racks, so i'm happy to give any advice i can

he no longer has it, but yakima makes a kit, it requires a third stablizer as you can see in the middle, not sure what the bike mounts are called, the modern version would be king cobras i think

that picture was taken in 2003

The extra mounting points are called a stretch kit. We have a Yakima tray mount bike rack like that on our other car....I think it's the Raptor.
