Can't decide...2000 Prerunner or 2004 ext cab...Help!

Just joined the forum after a 5 year affair with a couple of Tundras

Looking to buy either:

2000 Prerunner SR5 ext. cab 6 cyl. w/105k miles...or
2004 ext. cab base 2.4 cyl. w/118k miles

Both need tires...both are very clean.

Just not sure if I should go with the new 04 or enjoy all the goodies (pwr, cd, suspension, etc.) on the 2000.

What are your thoughts?

I am just using the truck for around town, short trips (less than 200 miles), and driving in some snow here in Kansas City.

Just found out the 2000 Prerunner timing belt was not replaced at 90,000...10 yr. old Tacoma with original timing belt and water pump. $900.00 repair on top of the asking price...should I stay with the Prerunner or look closer at the 2004?

id say the 2000 prerunner.
It should have the higher stance and better off road suspension
I also think the '00 prerunner has six lug rims vs the 5 lug on the 04.
the 2.4 engine will feel weak since your coming from the tundra trucks.
there are lots of differences between the models.

edit: isnt the SR5 a convinece package?

Yea...I'm a little concerned that the 2.4 will be a bit weak with the only advantage being at the gas pump.

Yikes! No votes for the mpg king 2.4 standard extended cab 04

One of the nice perks the Prerunner has that even though it is 4 years "older" it has low miles and 13,000 miles less than the 04.

Yikes! I updated the info on the trucks...needless to say I now have to factor in a $900 maint. repair since I found out the timing belt and water pump have not been changed.

Even though the 2000 Prerunner only has 105,000 miles it is still ten years old and that belt is probably ripe to be replaced.

What are your thoughts?

Try working it into the deal if it has not already been done, assuming they have the paperwork to prove it.

X2. Since you said you will be driving it in the snow Id look for a 4WD. But if the Prerunner with the TRD rear locker will suit your needs, dont pass it up! Haggle the price for the timming belt and go for it!
And just to throw this out there as it seems not to many people are aware of this, the 3.4 (5VZ-FE) is a non-interference motor, meaning if the timming belt breaks the pistons WILL NOT hit the valves, you will just be stranded untill you get a new belt.

Thanks for the info.

Deal is not done yet. Due to pick it up later this week. Haven't heard back from the owner yet after I asked him for details regarding the timing belt.

'02TRD has a good point...at this late date it is going to be touchy "renegotiate terms" if indeed the repairs have not been done.

I say go for the PreRunner. I had a 2k PreRunner, and it was by far my favorite vehicle I ever owned. FWIW I sold it in Nov 09 for 9K with 95K miles without the timing belt changed, and the engine felt like the same day I bought it. Here is a snap of her.

Well, I threw in the towel. The Prerunner needed new tires, water pump, timing belt, tensioner, belts, etc. Looking at close to $1,700.00 to bring up to par.

All of a sudden my $7,000.00 Prerunner is turning into a $9,000.00 buy after taxes.

So, have to decide if I go ahead with the 2004 Base Ext. Cab w/118k miles. Doesn't need tires or any other maint. for right now. In the long run since I don't do any offroading the 2.4 is more than sufficient.

Now I just have to figure out how to level an 04 ext cab

Thank you for all your input!
