Gen 1 6-Cyl Valve Adjustment?

Is it really necessary to adjust the valves on these trucks? (2003 3.4 liter) If so, is it a big job?

I am willing to tackle adjusting the valves. I haven't done it on an engine, but have done it on TONS of small gas engines since I teach SGE.

Any tips to make it go smoother?
Certain style feeler gauges or any other tools that make it fast?

I wonder if its really necessary on the 6 cyls. Are the valves out of spec that much?

why would one need to adjust valve's?

 

If they are loud, then yea, but otherwise no. You really only have to regularly adjust valve clearance on cars that are designed to be easy to adjust. Ones where you just remove the valve cover, loosen a nut, use a feeler gauge, tighten it, and put the valve cover back on. If it's a long difficult thing to do, odds are it's not something you ever need to do regularly. Probably only when you rebuild the engine.

 

Doesnt the service manual say the valves need adjustment every 80k?

Its a shim over bucket valve train I think. So you cant really adjust it as the cam lobe presses directly on the shim/bucket which are over the valves, so theres no rocker arms. Thats what I have read.

 

It IS shim and bucket design so you will have to first measure the valves, see how far out they are and order the correct size shims to correct the problem. You will have to remove the valves to do this so its a pretty big job on this motor. Honestly if you're under 200k miles I wouldn't worry unless its making a lot of noise.
