Fuel Filter

    Not my Taco but the Wife's 4runner, I dont think the fuel filter has ever been changed and I know it wont be easy, so Im looking for some tips of any kind to get the lines loose cause guaranteed something will get fudged up.

    I've changed the fuel filter out on my bro in laws 4runner. Its fairly easy. I'm not sure what size wrenches you need, but you need two on each side of the filter to undo the metal lines. You may have to bend them slightly to remove the filter once you have undone the lines, and loosened the clamp that wraps around the filter and holds it to the frame. Be prepared to get a good bit of gas on your hands, arms, and shoulders lol. Hope this helps out some! :)

    Relieve the fuel system pressure by first placing a container under the fuel filter. Slowly loosen a joint with the correct size wrench and a backup wrench, if necessary. Let the fuel from the fuel line slowly empty into the container. Once it all runs out, you can fully disconnect the joint.​

    Disconnect the negative battery cable. Locate the fuel filter in the engine compartment at the inlet line to the fuel rail. Remove the filter inlet and outlet lines and plug them to prevent any remaining fuel from leaking out, or dirt from entering the system.


    Take out the fuel filter and remove it from the bracket. Place the new fuel filter in the bracket. Install the filter in the vehicle and tighten the bolts to 14 ft-lbs. Install new gaskets and tighten the union bolts to 22 ft-lbs.

    Re connect battery, start vehicle and check for leaks.

    Oh sorry Guys I should have been more specific, its the one under the truck along the frame( I forgot about the one under the hood, Thanks for that) and it looks pretty rusted and all gummed up, thats why im worried about breaking the line.

    If you don't have good line wrenches in the proper size to keep from rounding off the fittings, it might be worth it to pay a garage to do it for ya. The fittings on the lines are usually real tight and very soft and round off easily. They shouldn't charge more than 1/2 hour labor.

    What Chris said...and to add you can also depressurize the fuel system by removing the fuel filler cap...This will relieve any pressure built up in the tank...Disconnect the fuel pump harness connector or even easier pull the EFI fuse and crank over the engine for 2-3 secs...

    i did this a couple weeks ago...took like 20 mins max

    pulled the EFI fuse...started the truck, let it die out (this removes the built up fuel pressure)

    get under the truck and loosen the nuts (you don't need flare nut wrenches)

    it helps to pull the hardlines out of the holders....just gently pull the lines out of the filter and go from there
