OP, you should find the guy that put a Supra motor in his taco. It's gotta be mad fast with a turbo or 2.

all stock so far, but looking to get some part soon. I want to add boost
you could easily go to a junkyard and go to a totaled newer Tacoma cut out the front subframe weld it to your alder Tacoma frame make the adjustments that way it's an easy bolt-on situation and then take all the electronic instruments out of the ripta, and just do a complete swap you're pretty much just moving everything to an older frame that's actually not that hard trying to hook up the 4.0 to the older parts is going to be a big pain in the butt and that's where the money comes from but you don't have to do that if you just buy junkyard stuff that still works and just switch it over it's actually not that hard go to a junkyard price at all out and see if it's even within your range because the 4.0 supercharged puts out way more power than a supercharged 3.4 and it's newer with more torque.
on top of that the older tacomas are almost 1,000 pounds lighter so think about it you're going to be using a newer motor with newer part on a frame. 1K lighter dude the gas savings and the speed you will gain will be worth the trouble I'm not here to say anybody's wrong but it's not as hard if you do it right.

as long as you can use the front subframe that came with the 4.0 you don't have any bolt on problems and then just buy all the junkyard stuff and do a complete swap but yeah you're definitely going to have to use the newer transmission no doubt but I've been to the junkyard and they have piles of them you can get one cheap.
you can also make it manual or transmission of your liking and while it's all taken apart you can clean it up put any parts on there to your liking....
again not trying to disrespect or tell anybody that they're wrong because everybody here is exactly right it's a lot of money and it's a lot of work but you can make it a little easier by using the subframe from the 4.0 and that alone will make your job way easier other than that you're going to have to do almost 100% swap on everything...
the junkyard shopping mall is your best bet

I'd rather see someone do a Toyota diesel swap. That'd be cool. But those are hard to get in the states.

    lol.
thanks for the positive comment but dang I had no idea it was that old I actually didn't even look..
the only reason why I said this is because I actually am doing this exact thing I'm putting my 4.0 V6 1gr Fe motor into a 04 Tacoma extended cab with a wide body kit.
I'm doing this route because the older tacomas are almost 1,000 pounds lighter.
so that's going to be a pretty good feeling when you gas it.
you're going to also save a lot of gas money.

when I eventually do the my build I'll show you guys what I did

    How about an LS swap?
Seems like it would be about as much work as a 4.0?

Probably less, since there are kits out there with stand alone ECUs etc...

Of course, LS swap just means you're also going to upgrade your entire drivetrain, too.
