1986 Toyota dually?

Saw this on Craigslist. Never seen them before, anyone know the story on this? Custom job?

Most likely just an add-on. You can buy them on JC Whitney, or you used to be able to at least. It's just a bolt on kit to make any truck into a dually. There's one around here made out of an old Nissan.

Other option, it could have been imported from somewhere. They may have made a smaller dually in another country and brought it over. Some countries that don't have the infrastructure for large commercial vehicles have trucks like that so they can haul a lot of weight in a small truck.

Toyota Dually Box Trucks were popular back in the 80's & 90's.
Used to be plenty of 'em around here.
Haven't seen 'em on Dealers Lots in years though

 

My pops had one....they were labeled as "one tons"...haha...and yes, we did load MANY one ton hay bails on that sucker. He sold when I was about 20 years old and it had 228k on it and still ran like a champ. Awesome little trucks. I like the above posters have not see one in probably 5-6 years

U-haul trucks??????????? They are very common, at least up here in the north east. They were very common with U-Haul.

 

Local independent Toyota shop owner told me that Toyota quit making chassis cab duallies because the RV manufactures were overloading them. Too much weight was causing the wheel bearings on the rear axle to fail. Then there was a lot of finger pointing between the RV people and Toyota, so they stopped offering it. Too bad, our 1986 utility body one ton at work is starting to look pretty damn beat up. Would be nice to have the option of buying another Toyota.

Yep very popular but the 2nd rear wheel is a bolt on adapter and they like to depart while on the road. Otherwise they are a good truck.

Generally that market has been replaced by more stout the Isuzu NPR

I was going to post about the campers on a dual wheel suspension, they look really top heavy and I don't see how the toyota even carrys the load, as most are likely way over loaded with gear.

According to the article it sounds like the axle setup was fixed at some point, and retrofits were done to some earlier vehicles. I guess that's something to look for when buying one of these old dually trucks.
