Prerunner to 4x4

I've made up my mind and i'm going to start a build in the spring to change my prerunner to a prerunner 4x4!!!! I'm really excited about this build and it will help me gain more knowledge about my taco. I've read several forums about this build but what my plan is, is to find an 01-04 dbl cab 4x4 and swap all the running gear cut the whole out of the center counsel for the stick. I saw a few other mods as well. I would like to make it a Manual Tranny but i know that would take a lot more time then i have. If anyone has any ideas or knows anyone parting out their 01-04 taco dbl cab let me know i'll be buying all the parts and starting the build in the spring. I'll kepp this thread up to date and keep everyone informed.

its gonna take alot of welding and some custom fab, why dont you just go ahead and put a solid axle under there and some big tires...

 

What do you mean about the welding and some custom fab? My dad also said it would be smart to make it a solid axle. How difficult would that be?

the kit from all pro is for links, if your not doing any crazy rock crawling then a leaf sprung kit would work. you would need the leaf hangers, shock hoops, frame plates and the axle, after that it would depend on what you want to do and what size tires you would want to run as to what axle you should get. there are alot of threads on ttora about 4x4 conversions.. good luck and post lots of pictures.

 

It's not just talk i've been saving the money for this project and have read tons of articles about this. Also, there is a group of my fellow friends and i that are very mechanically inclined. I've seen many conversions to the 4x4 with simply just being patient and getting all the parts needed. In the original post you can see i said in the spring this project will be started. And yeah any joe smo could go out and just buy a new truck but what experience and knowledge does taht get you. Sounds like to me ppl are just afraid to get their hands dirty lol! The main resaon for the post is to see if there are ppl out there holding on to parts or just some other additional information. Try to be more constructive with your feedback!

I hope your kidding. That truck is ridiculous. Why is everyone offering a solid front axle? A prerunner can be converted to 4wd. A prerunner is exactly the same as 4wd except missing parts. Get those parts and your good to go. I dont have much knowledge about what is exactly needed but more power to OP for trying to figure out

 

Yeah, SAS is going to be *way* more work than a bolt-up conversion, assuming you've got a donor 4x4 truck to provide the parts. In that case, Toyota has already done all the engineering work for you. In a SAS, you're making it up as you go along.

BIG jobs come in different scales. There's a difference between a "1 week big job" and a "3 week big job."

EDIT: This will be more work than you think. Whenever you get a choice to scale up the job, turn it down. E.g. changing from AT to Manual. Don't do it. You're AT already? Keep it AT.

 

Solid axle swap. Don't waste your time with IFS. Pirate4x4.com is your answer.

 

sell the prerunner and buy a 4x4.

 

that would be the easy option, but if you want to do the conversion, get an older tacoma with manual hubs, your doing all that work may as well do it right

 

Sounds like a great project that most would shy away from, KUDOS for you. I love a Challenge.
