Crap... put 6 quarts of oil in. Could that damage it?

Ug, my stupid self poured all 6 quarts of mobil 1 into my truck just now when I know it should only be 5.5. I thought i was on my 2nd to last quart when in fact i was on the last. Will that extra pint damage any of the oil delivery equipment? I know that will motorcycles it can be bad to over fill the oil because it can damage the oil pump, oil valves and put pressure on the bottom of the pistons etc.

I really don't feel like draining all the oil out and putting 5.5 quarts back in. If it really is a problem, is there an easy way to drain that half a quart?

 

you may be able to take the filter off and either dump whats in it...or install a mobil1 m1-209 filter.......i think its same size as normal, but a bit longer...and will be able to handle the other half a quart.

 

i always remove the filter after draining the oil out of the drain bolt. if i remove the filer while the engine is full of oil, won't all the oil just gush out?

 

no............it only cycles thru the filter. the rest is in the sump.

 

Couldn't you just put a quart sized container under the drain bolt and loosen the bolt slightly to where it leaks out, and fill the container?

well, maybe others will have better luck, but i just found out the hard way that my drain plug does not leak at all until the bolt is completely out. This left me laughably feeling for the hole in a panic as I made a mess of myself..... which has never happened to me with cars before...

Yep, sounds like the easiest fix for this dilema.....

 

ya, i took out a little over a quart and put 700ml back in. a little more than half a quart to make up for what got all over the skid plate, floor and my arms.

damn.... i wanted a magnetic drain plug like the one i have for my bike do detect and metal fragments in the oil..... but i might get that instead

If you would have looked at the dipstick you would have noticed the oil level just below full. 6 quarts is fine.

 

Drain 1/2 out, lesson learned, they don't tell you to not overfill just to waste ink and paper there is a reason for this!

1/2 quart too much isnt going to be a problem anyway. I would just leave it and remember for next time.

No but really the Fumoto cap may be a good investment. Or the Oil Change Wonder. I'm ordering one for my next oil change
