V6 and 2.7L Trannys - Same?

Im getting tired of only having 2WD so Ive been looking at doing a conversion to 4x4. I have found threads detailing the parts i need, however I am wondering if I need to get a 2.7L transmission, or will either one work? And if anybody is parting out a 4x4 near Eastern North Carolina, or New Hampshire, I would love to talk to you.

 

Wait, I'm confused. Don't you have the 2.7 tranny (4-speed) in your truck already? Most will tell you to just trade in your truck for a 4x4, depending on your skill in mechanics. But the transmission shouldn't be an issue.

But, I think, just maybe, you mean "Transfer Case" instead of "Tranny" which is an abbreviation for "Transmission."

If that's not what you mean, perhaps you should clarify your question.

 

alright sorry, perhaps question was not well worded.

When doing a PreRunner to 4x4 swap, you need a new transmission, transfer case, and shorter drive shaft to accomidate the additional length of the TC, which is roughly 11 and 3/4 inches or something along those lines.
Edit: A 4x4 transfer case cannot be attached to my transmission, meaning i need to replace that component, along with the drive shaft, cross member, spindles, etc.
MY question is: Is a transmission from a V6 compatable with my 2.7L engine?

 

I could be wrong, but I haven't heard of needing a new transmission for 4x4 swaps.

If i was to reuse the 2WD tranny i would need to crack it open and swap out the output shafts. Less work to just get a whole new one and skip that step.


Next question, and perhaps what is causing all the confusion: Did the 1st Gen 2.7L engine come with a 4x4 option? Or was that reserved only for the 3.4L?

 

Yes, you could get 4x4 in either the 2.7 setup, or the 3.4 setup.

 

OK, so is the transmission the same between the two of them? Thats what i have been wondering from the begining. Just didnt word it right.

It doesnt look to be too hard of a job, just a weekend of solid work. Anybody got a 100% positive answer?

 

After some further research, I have learned that the transmission in question is the A340F. It was used on both the 2.7L and 3.4L engines, equipped with 4WD, in all 1st Gen models.

The following is a list, which I believe to be complete, with the year and model of other Toyota's also using the A340F:

00 - 04 Tundra
95 - 04 4 Runner
90 - 94 Pickup
95 - 04 Tacoma
93 - 98 T-100
01 - 04 Sequoia

Of course, the A340F is located only on the 4WD equipped models of those years. The 2WD models come with different ones, such as my 04 PreRunner, which uses the A340E.

From what I have learned, the only differences between them is the wiring harness, but due to the absolute lack of Tacoma's at junk yards in the Southern NH/ Mass, and Eastern NC, I believe it will be far easier and cheaper to locate the A340F from one of the above listed vehicles, and simply purchase a harness off ebay, or if that fails, the dealership.
