ECU, wire harness, Tranny won't bolt up so you need one (might be a conversion out there), possibly drive shaft(s)............

Whats wrong with the 3.4? I have owned both, gas milage is not much different (the way I drive) and the 3.4 did have a little bit more pep.

Mostly gas millage, I do know that with the right set up with exhaust and air flow you can get alot better MPGs with the 4 cylinder, I have seen it first hand.

hahahah, so you looking to do all that work, all that time, and spend all that money to save a few dollars in gas????? You would be better off selling or trading your truck for a 4cyl.

Thats like going and buying a new Prius to save money on gas... Who cars its thousands more and would take 10 years for the average persons travels to offset that difference of cost to difference in fuel milage.... Your saving money....

If you want to save money, trade or sell your truck and get a 4cyl. I am sure some would rather have the v6. Not to mention.... if you do that... your vin # will show its a 4cyl and you will save on insurance as well... and personal property taxes (if your area has that)

I built a spreadsheet that will allow you to calculate gas savings by either:

1) Keeping only 1 vehicle or

2) Buying an additional "economy" vehicle to try to save on gas if you have a long commute etc.

I have taken car insurance, gas mileage, price of gas/gallon, maintenance, miles driven, etc into account. I would imagine it is quite accurate. After you input all of the needed parameters it will return how many months it will take you to pay yourself back in gas savings.

If you want a copy, just PM me.

However, with regards to your idea I totally disagree that it will be a savings. Don't screw up your truck...it'll probably never be right again. Secondly, I've owned a 2.7 and now a 3.4. I could get about 22mpg with the 2.7 and I get about 19 with my 3.4. Three (3) mpgs will take you a long time to recoup. If you want to do something to get better MPGs, buy a 1994 Civic for $2k.

Crunch the numbers...

I suspect after you crunch the numbers, you'll find it'll take much much longer than you're willing to wait to make up the difference in the mileage costs. Let's say that after all is said and done, your engine/tranny swap will cost – and I'm just pulling a number out of the air here, because I truly don't know – but let's say the cost to do the change out *and* your ideal improvements is $2000. How long will it take to realize those cost savings out? After you crunch the numbers, it's pretty sobering.

As a matter of fact, this is a perfect problem for my 6th grade math students to figure out. I'll get back to you on what my students come up with. They're going to hate me...

Points taken, and Thanks
Before this truck I had a 2.0 liter Jetta which would get 500kms a tank at a cost of 45 bucks at the time, I then had a 96 Tacoma 3.4 4x4 5spd which would also get 500kms per tank at a cost of about 60 bucks at the time, so along comes this 02 TRD 4x4 3.4 excab (basically same truck as the 96) surprisingly it has a bigger tank and as of yesterday it cost me over 70 bucks to get if Im lucky 400kms. Now granted Im on over sized tires (265/75/16) but as you can see Im a little frustrated with the price of fuel and the millage Im getting.
