Question for Gen 1 owners

I am sure you love your truck, but if you could replace it with a Gen 2 (cost not being an issue), would you?

Or of there are any Gen 2 owners lurking in here that used to have a Gen 1, Do you miss, would you go back?

 

I lost my '99 Tacoma due to the frame buyback. I now have '10. Both trucks have / had their good points. I like the wider stance of my '10 but I liked the old school design of the '99. As far as interior the '10 is definitely more sporty. Rest of it, the trucks (in my case were completely different):

Being I'm married now and planning to start a family soon, for this truck I wanted to go with something more basic and save some moolah. Plus I've always loved the look of the regular cabs.

 

I just couldnt get rid of my 2003. It's proven it's self to be reliable, and as long as its fixable, ill keep fixin it.

 

personally, i like not having to worry about my truck... it gets beat on and i don't worry about it... it feels rugged...

i bolt stuff on it, i park it in tight spots, and it's all good...

 

Wouldnt trade. I could've bought a 2nd gen but I didnt want one. They are nice trucks, but to me they have an identity crisis. They are too big/overpowered to be a small truck, yet too small/underpowered to be a big truck.

 

I had an 06...got rid of it for my 04. Like my first gen a lot better. I do kinda miss the 4.0 power tho....but that's about it.

 

I luvs my 1st generation. I can beat on it without feeling guilty. Plus the 3.4l engine in these things will run forever!

I currently have an 06, and am trying to sell it (see sig) and will most likely replace it with either a 1st Gen Tacoma or a 3rd Gen 4Runner. The replies in this thread, make me feel confident I will not regret it!

 

I could have replaced my 00 Taco with a 2nd gen, but instead went with an 04 D-Cab. Main killer for me was the plastic bed, and the robotic fender flares.

 

I bought an '04 Tacoma new and regrettably sold it in '07. Test drove new Tacomas last year but bought another '04 and cost had nothing to do with the decision.

 

No, i love my 1st gen and my dad has a 2nd gen. Its a nice truck, but i like the the styling of the first gen better. If i ever had to get a new vehicle i would probably get a 4runner around a 1999 to 2002. I like the early toyota's better.

 

Never! i bought a 1st Gen because I like then more then the 2nd Gens it's more rugged of a truck and well built. When I buy a new truck a looong time from now it will probably be a full sized truck unless Toyota makes a Tacoma with a v8 and a steel bed. and I'll still keep my 1st Gen as a trail rig.

 

You are all making me want a 1st gen more than i did before i started this thread!

I just need someone to buy my 2nd gen now!!

not too much wrong with the first gens mechanically.....but when you buy one, look it over good and make sure it wasnt neglected.

 

that's a good question, I think somewhere deep inside I want a second gen, I do like my 1st gen...but the original owner neglected the interior more then I personally would and because of that I have to pay the price. So having a fresh start to keep my s#@$ clean would be nice.

 

If money wasn't an issue I would have a 1 gen. and a 2 gen. I think both are great trucks, and both have their own advantages and disadvantages. My dream one day is to own a Taco from every mobel!!

 

I'd beat my entire family to death with a rusty spoon before I would ever part with my '04 Taco.

For what it's worth -

I bought an '04 in January of last year from a local dealer. It was a DC, without any additional features, 34k on the odometer, and in immaculate condition.

I had the option of buying several second gens (various years / configs) for the same price or less. In the end I went with the '04 and paid a premium for it ($22K before tax).

Would I do it again? No question. I might haggle a little more over the price (up to and including lighting the sales manager on fire) but I put up a damn good fight with them and considering my credit was shit at the time I'm happy with the outcome.

Just make sure it's clean, got a good record, and drives straight. Beyond taking it in for a complete once over, what more can you do?

It was the best purchase (next to my house, dog(s), xbox360, wife) that I ever made. You won't regret it.

I love my 2001 Tacoma (and loved my 2000 Tacoma). I could have bought either a 1G or a 2G and looked for 2 years for the right 1G. It is worth it. The only drawback is finding one with no frame rust issue and in good shape. The right 1G is difficult to find. The motor is bullet-proof but the frames can be suspect and some folks don't keep the body and interior as straight as I would like.
