Hey guys, just bought my '97 Tacoma 3.4L a couple months ago, and just curious how often people with a similar truck are changing their oil? I don't have the manual so I don't know what the factory recommendations are, I keep hearing that 5k is kind of the new standard rather than 3k. The driving I do is pretty light, freeway/city mixed. Thanks for the advice!

i use regular dino oil and come from the school of 3k. even with synthetic, i doubt i'd be able to go much more than 5k and still be sleeping at night! :)

5k seems to be the general consensus regarding the newer engines that are out there. ToyotaCare (the 2 year/25k mile program toyota is offering on their new vehicles) allows for 2 years of free maintence regarding oil changes and tire rotation. The intervals are set at 5k for every oil change. Now keep in mind, the engines are a little more advance than say a 96. You could get away with changing it every 5k miles, but im a person that likes to do mine every 2500-3k miles. Being a 96k, id say stick with 3k. If your somewhat hard pressed for money, go with the 5k.
