Picked up a 98 tacoma trd 4wd this weekend end and have a few ?'s

Hi guys i scored a good deal on a used tacoma this weekend it is the TRD 3.4 motor with 4wd auto and rear dif lockers. The guy said the person he got it from had the bottom end rebuilt and something in the tranmission as well. The turck was a project truck and has sanded bed no right fender and has something going on with the motor and dosent run right. So i bought this not to fix but for parts i got the whole thing for $800 which i think its a pretty good deal being i paid 600 for a dam tranmission for my 99 tacoma trd which it shfits hard with that tranny. So i was planing to put this motor and tranmission in my 99 tacoma which is all the same beside a year older and it dosent have the rear def locks. So would there be any conflicted useing the 98 motor in my 99? from what i can tell it looks the samw. Now with the turck i just bought it runs but its getting to much air or something its a air issue for sure cause i can put a rag in front of the intake behind the breather filter and it will run but slugish but if i take the rag out it will die. the cel light says its a MAF malfunction would that cause this type of problem? but other then that it shifts good and seems to drive good and has no leaks or anything.

 

Yes - a MAF malfunction might explain it.

Sounds like an MAF sensor. Mine went twice on my '99. First time I replaced it, second time I cleaned it with some special MAF cleaner from Autozone or PepBoys. Both times the results were favorable.

 

Before you swap engines; check w/ your DMV to see if there are gonna be any issues registering the vehicle after the swap. I think CA DMV requires that engine swaps need to be same year or newer for current vicheles. I'm not an expert when it comes to the DMV, but it would hurt to make an enquiry.

 

I did clean it with some eletroin cleaner did'nt help I dont want to buy a new maf for it cause i plan to just use my 99's MAF setup on that engine which i would'nt think there would be any problems.

I live in OK with AR tags cause im on stateline so i dont have to worry about DVM or anything there here on the swap.
