roaring going down the road

Guys I got a 2001 tacoma 4x4 with 165,000 and just replaced the tires thinking they were doing it but nope it's still there. The roaring will increase with the rpm's and decrease when you let off. Any suggestions on what it could be. I grease it myself once a year and never go off road. If there are some suggestions how can I find out if that is the problem. Thanks Rick

 

Possibly the drive shaft or wheel bearings???

 

Where does it sound like the roaring is coming from? Engine bay, tire area, underbody, etc...

 

sounds like its coming from the back underneath. I'm thinking driveshaft, but don't know and I hate to say this but how do you know? Rick

 

Well is it going away with rpms or speed? try going down a hill and taking it out of gear to make sure it's not the trans. It dose sound like it might be the wheel bearings.

 

Does it sound like a fan type thing? This sounds dumb but could you have something wrapped around your driveshaft that's whipping around making noise?

With the engine turned off, open the hood and see if you can rotate the big cooling fan between the radiator and the engine. It should spin freely. If you can't easily spin the fan by hand, the fan clutch has failed.

When the fan clutch fails you will hear a roaring sound as the engine RPMs increase. It will sound normal at idle.

 

Thanks for the replies. It's not the fan belt and thanks for the information. I start hearing it around 50mph and I started paying close attention to the noise and it's still there going down hills. Like I said you have to get over 50 to hear it from just road noise. Thanks Rick
