I want to do mine as well. They're only leaking, but all of these failures lately scare me...

 

I thought the LBJ's were pretty simply. Mine just took a HF pickle fork and a BFH. Popped right out.

 

I'm worried that once I get the old one out, I won't be able to get the spindle and the new ball joint back together because of how stiff my springs are.

"pretty simple" is relative. I've never done anything like this and have no clue what it all involves.

 

Do you have basic sockets, pliers, and a large-ish hammer?

Then absolutely, you can do it

After tire is off, it's just the 4 lbj bolts attaching it to the spindle, the one big lbj bolt/castle nut attaching it to the lca, and the bolt/castle nut attaching it to the tie rod.

The tricky bit is popping the two big bolts out of place once the nuts are off (especially the tre bolt). The one attachin the lbj to the lca is pretty easy: just re-thread the castle nut on, upside down, until the end is flush with the end of the bolt (to protect the threads) and beat with the hammer. It should pop loose.. For the second bolt attaching the lbj to the tire-rod, you can't just wack the bolt since things will just flop around... Find something solid that will sit on the ground and support the lbj while you hammer the tie-rod end bolt. (don't forget to re-thread the old castle nut on part way) I usually use a piece of 1/4" stock for this.

Re-install is even easier.

Then alignment...

 

I think mine were replaced in the recall at around 50,000-60,000 miles. I have 125,000 miles now.

 

Dewd. My new Moog lbjs started leaking within 1000 miles. They do see a lot of abuse though..

 

Just did the passenger side of mine and it was cake. Impact gun vibrated it right off. Going to finish off the other side tomorrow. Old one wasn't too bad and had no slack but I had no idea on mileage.

I have absolutely no play in mine, but driving down fire roads is really rough on them...

I have about 5,000 miles on my Moog uppers and with the angle that they're at I'm surprised they haven't ripped.
