Alternator question

I broke a belt today when I started up my truck. The pulley on my alternator seems to be frozen. Does anyone know if I can just replace the pulley/bearing instead of the whole thing? My battery power seems to be strong, which makes me believe that the alt. itself is still good. I havent taken it out yet to look at it closely,but it seems like this may be a little cheaper fix if possible.

 

I'm pretty sure the pulley is solid on a shaft that runs through the alternator with a bearing on either end. I think you'll need to replace the whole alternator if it wont turn.

the alt is really easy to change.. If i remember right its held in by the tension bolt and the mounting bolt.. you can swap it out in 30 mins or less.. I had to change mine march last year and i got one for $250 and thats here in alaska. so you should be able to get it cheaper..

 

yeah, its a easy fix. Just found one at auto parts warehouse for $80. Not sure of the quality though. Going rate is about $200. Just looking to save a dime. Thanks for your input. All advice is greatly appreciated.

 

I would call around at an alternator repair shop and ask them if the bearing can be replaced. I just had a bearing replaced on my wife's alternator in her Grand Caravan for $60, which was better than $170

 

I'm taking it in to a rebuild shop this morning. Estimated cost of repair- $60. I'll post the outcome when I get it back. Thanks for the idea!
