How hard is a transmission oil change?

Hey everyone, I used to do all my own maintenance on my old classic car but since getting my Tacoma I haven't really done anything. I need my transmission oil changed and wanted to see if it was manageable. Would really appreciate the advice. Thanks.

 

cant be anything like the gen2.....thats like rocket science

but more in the line of how hard is it to do the flush? drop pan etc...

what about the rear dif?

its too easy to change fluids..nobody should have to have a stealership do that. there is a lot of how tos on here for fluid changes... check em out

I read several write ups on the trans fluid...it seems easy to do, but easy to mess up also...

if I buy the fluid and filter I might see if I can get some help from a tech that works at my gf's family ford stealership...they lemme use their lifts sometimes!!

tranny isn't that hard, it's just getting the right amount of fluid in. my manual was about half a quart or so lower than what the dipstick read, which lead to me stopping and the transmission basically shutting down a couple times, so just make sure you're dipstick reading is correct, whether it be hot or cold.

 

Ok, I'm in Fresno for the week, anyone that wants me to change their auto tranny fluid, come to Fresno and I'll do it in the parking lot of the hotel.
It's that easy.
I brought my tools with me, I'm here for work.

 

If you know how to check the dip stick, this isn't an issue.

 

worst case scenario I straight out pay one of the techs under the table to walk over and do it for me...just easier to deal with a toyota dealership that I can be more upfront with whereas the family dealership is helping me out so I can't really make any demands ya know!

 

if youve changed engine oil then you can do this...add and check dip stick, add some more and check dip stick. you'll be fine

Once you do this stuff you'll wonder why you ever paid someone.

 

the rear diff is super easy. there is a drain and fill plug. its a 24mm size plug pull both of them and fill it back up.

the tranny is pretty easy too. you dont have to change the filter on it, however it would be smart to. there is a drain plug on the transmission pan as well.

if it is a manual trans its the same thing as the rear diff

 

just changed all the driveline fluids yesterday. the front diff took longer than all the rest together. had to take down the skid plates and there wasnt much room for the squeeze bottle. had to tuck the bottle up inside the fan shrowd with a piece of hose on it.buy a quart or 2 extra its almost impossible to get all the oil out of the bottle.

 

You can get a little push-pull pump from your local auto parts supplier to pump the fluid out of that bottle, into the rear diff.

 

rear diff - you need 24mm socket. first remove the FILL PLUG then drain plug and let drain. re-install drain plug and add fluid until it overflows and let it flow throught the diff and then add some more until it overflows again then install fill plug and then you are done. get lsd additive if you need it. all info i found on this site.
transmission - drain and fill to proper level on dip stick - some may say to clean the screen also- there could be more to this but i dont think there is

 

...and then check it after rotating the wheels....I'd check the rear diff after a drive. That fluid is pretty thick.
