I'm debating how to word this so as to make the problem more clear and easily diagnosable. I decided to just put you in my shoes as I go to make use of my vehicle:

I start the engine, depress the brake, disengage the parking brake, shift from park into drive, remove my foot from the brake, slowly depress the gas... revs but no go, until I go a push a little harder and then -

    BAM!!!!!!

It's like I just got rear-ended! A sudden jolt from the rear and the thing finally responds to the revs, kicks into gear, whatever the heck you want to call it but this is the manner in which my truck performs its primary function- going.

I just got a minor service from the dealer, kid says to me "clean bill of health" with a jackass smile. Sure. If you got out of bed in the morning, tried to walk to the bathroom, it didn't work, you kept exerting more and more effort while standing completely still, then suddenly your body jerked across the room unexpectedly... there would be some minor problems with you. You would not get out of the doctor's office with a "regularly scheduled" checkup.

Yes, this problem had shown itself before I had my truck serviced at 57600 miles. I'd say it started around 55000, but at a much lower frequency and severity. Honestly, it scares me to tell the dealer something like that is happening. As long as I get where I need to go, it's not worth the busted wallet. I do not have thousands to drop all at once on labor, do you?

Well, the problem is getting worse, more frequent and severe. I guess I can narrow my final motivation for at the very least creating an account here, posting this, and tapping the knowledge base, down to this- My girlfriend shrieks every time it happens. Yes. I told you it felt just like getting rear-ended, and that's what she must think is happening every time we get in with the intent to drive off. Not a comfortable start to the trip, ever.

To help diagnose the problem, here are some details and figures:

Happens about a third of the time, perhaps depending on whether I shifted from drive tom park, or from reverse to park for to end the previous trip. For example, when I park in my garage I go from drive to park. Then, when I leave the garage I go from park to reverse before shifting to drive - this causes a slight delay in acceleration response, but no "kick". When parking on the curb, going from drive to park, then park to drive when I get back in - this causes the big jolt. When reversing into a space, then driving out after being parked - a slight jolt but not as bad.

The fluctuations and variables are what is killing me here. I cannot explain all of this to the dealer and expect to get anything more than a confused look of information overload befuddlement followed by a boilerplate response, "we can check this, that, blah blah blah, resulting in ludicrous labor costs and replacing who knows what, taking who knows how long... if that fixes it in the long run. I doubt it.

Basically, I am posting here, or rambling (sorry), to find out if this issue has occurred to anyone before and what the problem actually was.

    please help diagnose my:

    2002 Prerunner V6 TRD
    58k mi

    Thank you.

If this is how it's always been- It might be a problem or might now. If it's getting worse...That sounds like a transmission issue....but unless you have transmission experience I wouldn't start trying to fix it...so you might be stuck talking to a dealer or another shop to get it fixed.

It seems like you know what makes it happen....Go sit in the truck and make it happen 2 or 3 times in a row from the different types of starts you do and then take it to the dealer and show them....

Move from park to drive but let it sit there until you feel the trans engage the drive gear.. it sounds like its lagging and then since you have your foot on the gas its slamming forward.. try it

Well, I'm not an expert on these trucks by any means but that sounds to me like the pump in the transmission is going bad. Have you changed the fluid lately. If not do that first. If it helps but only a little then the pump would be my guess. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that's a tranny rebuild or it may be cheaper to get a remanufactured tranny from a shop and have em switch em out.

It could be the torque converter by itself as well. That's still having to take the tranny out though.

    Hope that helps

A good transmission shop can diagnose most problems without dropping the trans. Skip the dealer, go to a specialist.

Does it happen if you shift from Park to 2 or 1, skipping Drive?

Sounds like the tranny fluid is low.

Wearing would give slipping. Not a sudden engagement.

you sure man? when i interned at aamco i asked my boss why mine did it and he said it could just be the age

the way he explained it to me was (mine did it in reverse) reverse takes the most pressure build up to engage, but since the packs were worn it would take longer to build up the pressure and it would slam into place

The pressure shouldnt be more, just routed differently in the valve body. The clutches or bands are used to hold a part of the planetary gear system in place, allowing for a different gear ratio. They are only employed when in a forward gear. Reverse gear is its own gear, and uses no clutches or bands.

This may sound dumb but since its happening when going from parked to drive and he mentioned he uses the e-brake, could it be that the emergency brake is sticking? and the BAM is a result of the ebrake un-sticking after he applies more gas.

Ive heard of that happening in the past, but its mostly a lurch when it disengages.

@epa4wd I think if it was the parking break if would just be like a jolt of acceleration and not like a bang or a clunk in the tranny like what the op is having

I mentioned it beacuse it has happened to me twice, but only after washing the truck and letting it sit all night (cold), it actually does a bang, obviously not from the tranny. Now I wash it, park it in the garage and either leave it without ebrake, or leave it on slightly, never happened again.
