Wondering what tacoma to buy for my first truck. I have been doing a bit of research but still could use a lot of help. I've got about 4k to spend. Just looking for a regular cab base model tacoma that will last me. I read quite a bit about rotting frames on the first generation tacomas so that is something I will surely keep in mind, any other specifics to keep an eye on?
    P.S. I'm in Massachusetts.

    Thanks for the help,
    Tim

I had my 1998 Tacoma Xtra cab for 9 1/2 years; the only problems I had with it were the starter going out (twice) and the sway bar bushings needing replaced - that was until I got into a wreck in January and totaled it. I bought a 2001 Tacoma Crew Cab TRD 4x4 about two weeks later for $10k that was in great shape with very little underbody rust; LOVE IT! I don't think you can go wrong with any model, you just have to decide what you want and look around.

I'd look for a southern truck, but be warned, the owners are generally really proud of them.

Subbed to see what kind of advice comes forth. I'm in my own research phase, and have started collecting my thoughts here.

For me, the main decision is "1st gen + TrueTrac" vs 2009+ with the ABS-based limited slip. I've never had a new vehicle so I might pony up for one and drive it into the ground. But the Taco in my head is the smaller 1g; so tidy and rightsized. 2g technology in 1g size and build quality would be WINNING (to quote the modern philosopher Charlie Sheen).
