96 Speedo Cable Issue....Tried Search...

Good morning all.

Since winter hit the midwest back in mid November I have been dealing with the old squealing speedo issue that I know a lot of people have. I have just ignored it because it only lasts for about the first 5 minutes of my drive and then it goes away.

I never had a bouncing needle and it always read correctly. Other than the squeal I never had any clicking or jumping and have always had a constant odometer reading.

I didn't drive the truck all weekend and got in it this morning to come to work and the speedo has completely stopped working. My drive to work is about 24 miles and the odometer only rolled 1 mile on the drive in.

So is the cable broke? Is it slipping in the speedo? Do you think I need to replace the cable or replace the cluster? Please help me out; I tried to search but didn't find much and I usually don't get many replies on here because I am not a regular.

 

It could be either one (cable broken; cable connection loose). Either way, you're going to have to pull it out to know for sure. If you're going to pull it out, you might as well just go ahead and install a new cable just on general principles.

Odds are you'll only be needing to replace the cable.

 

Thats kind of what I was figuring. Any good write ups on cluster and cable removal???

 

BUMP.....

I have needle bounce and an awesome rattle sound. I just picked up a new cable and put it in thursday so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

If nothing else I will get on and post a quick write up of what I did.

 

Alright guys sooooo sorry bout not having any pics or anything of what I did but I just replaced my speedo cable in about 45 minutes. The hardest part was getting the old one out of behind the heat shroud on the fire wall and putting the new one in its place. The rest was pretty simple and straight forward tho. If you need any help with the take out and install let me know where your stuck and I will try to help out.

 

Needle bounce and rattle? I thought mine was the only one that did that.
My needle goes crazy for 5-10 minutes and then works fine.
Its good to know that it is a common problem.
Can someone post the part number of the speedometer cable?
I might have to consider replacing it.

I replaced the speedo cable with an OEM new. Took me about 45 minutes and fixed the problem!

 

You don't happen to have the part number for the speedo cable do you?
