Magical left turn signal

Recently, every time I hit the brakes my left turn light (on the dash) comes on. While sitting in traffic the other day, I noticed the front turn signal comes on as well when I hit brakes. First guess is I have a short somewhere in the wires. (We have recently had a lot of rain, so I think that contributed to the prob) Anyone else have this issue?

 

do u have trailor wiring? i see alot of freakin weird light issues from trailor wiring flaws. shorts, opens, corrosion... ect

 

Good point, trailer wiring has been installed for years. Not sure if it is factory or not. I did add a camper shell and spliced into the wiring for the 3rd brake light. I might need to double check that.

 

yup check all trailor wiring connectors. might even have to pull a tail light(where its tapped in at). at the shop, when we have weird issues like that, we go staright to the trailor wiring.

 

Thanks dude, I'll try to track those down. We get a lot more rain/snow here (MD) than back home (MD/AR/TX) and that very well could be the culprit.

 

If you find the splice you made to be the problem, it wouldn't hurt to go out and purchase some liquid tape and apply it to your splice, that stuff is pretty awesome.

 

did you ever figure out your wiring problem? i recently got a camper shell and just cannot seem to get the wiring right to make the third light in the shell work. i've tried multiple things but no luck yet. i'm not very good w/ electrical stuff in general, but i'd like to get it working.

 

My issue turned out to be the trailer wiring box/harness. It was a plug-and-play system similar to this:

It was NOT this exact product, just similar concept. I might end up ordering this one. My truck is 10 yrs old and I guess time and the 2 yrs of salt/snow/etc up here took it's toll on the wiring harness.
For your camper shell, test your third brake light to make sure it works. Next, get a test light and pull your tail light and look for the tail light wires and tap into those. That is what I did on mine and it working. I had to buy a new connection for the camper shell, but that only cost me around $3-$5. I hope that helps.

 

You know, I've been struggling to put the Draw-tite product in for a while now. They guy who sold it to me said it will work on my 01 Taco, but I noticed later after driving the hour or so home, that it's made for earlier model Toyota pickups. I had some crazy stuff going on. The left brake light became the signal while the right worked fine. The problem there was a bad ground, so always check that first. Next, I've found that they failed to put in a pin in that connector, so there's no power to the right running taillight, although both brakes work fine (seperate power feeds). Unfortunately I cut the 4 pin off the end and put on a 7 pin for my trailer, so I can't return it. I guess I'll just hardwire the left running tailight to the right.

Be careful what you buy - make sure it's got all the pins to line up with your original ones!

 

That one in the link you posted has got the six pins, judging by the photo. I'm going to call this guy who sold me the wrong one and have words.

 

i had a similar lighting problem my buddy gave me a drawtight harness for a 99, i have an 01 . the setup for the 99 was 1 pin shy. i had it greased and ready to go when i niticed it.

 

I had the exact problem. Everytime I braked my turn signal when on. I just removed the trailer harness and the problem is gone it must have shorted out and back fed to the turn signal.

 

Yeah, sounds like a ground problem. The proper Drawtite part number for our trucks is 118379.

 

mine did that . i just tuck it all out .

 

I have the same problem, but with the right signal. I will have to try this fix
