over 20mpg 2001 extracab, trd 3.4L

I just drove my 2001 Tacoma extracab TRD, 3.4L, stock tires and suspension,
211.000 mile, from Wisconsin to New Jersey shore and got 20.82 miles per gallon!
The only mod that may have helped me is my deck plate mod with baffle.
I used cruise control at 62 - 63 mph.
I think we are still using winter blend gasoline 87 octane. This mileage is a first for me during winter and early spring!

I can't wait for my summer two month camping trip out west! Should get even better mileage!

Anyone else get this mileage on winterblend?

 

I get 21 every time when I travel going 75 on cruise and using 87 gas

 

That's great mileage for such a high speed.

I can get 22-23 if I stay under 65, accelerate slowly, and slow down going uphill.

I get 20 mpg at 70 mph.

 

Interesting! I have never gotten anything over 18 if I drive over 70.
Guess they improved things since 01 !
I'm at 2000 rpm at 62 mph, is this similar to what you see?
Maybe I have a stiffer gear?

 

I have a 98 model manuel 4X4 and it rides at 2500rpm when at 75 getting 21

 

Best I've gotten was 21.8 last summer with my double cab and a/t

 

Just got 20.8 with mostly highway driving at 65-70 mph. I got LT265/75/16 tires and leveled out. I'm happy with that!

 

I did 23 once coming down from angel fire NM, about 150 mile trip. It was mostly downhill and 70 mph though.

That was also on stock suspension and bald P rated tires.

I average around 19-20 now with the LT265/75/16 tires and lift.

 

just got 21mpg on a 200 mile round trip back roads at about 63mph. floored it 3 times to pass other cars on straight aways. V6, auto, 130k miles. Only non-stock part is 265/65/17 gen 2 rims/stock tires.

hoping afe filter and tonneau will bump it up just a little. Find out in about a month

 

I know this video is not about a Tacoma, but I thought it was pretty impressive the mpgs they gained.

Let me add, tire size P265/75R16, 4x4 with a cap.

If you get better mileage, do you have different size tires? Are you 4x4?
Do you have lock-out hubs?

What is different about your Tacoma?

I had 265/70/16 tires and im 4x4 with auto hubs.

 

best i have done is 23 and that was going to yellowstone from powell and driving around yellowstone all day. drove hard up and down the mountain too but kept it at a good 65 on the high way

 

From Healy, AK to Anchorage last Thursday, I set it on cruise control at <2000 rpms. I reset my Ultragauge Trip meter, filled it up and went. With my roof rack on, I got an astounding 24.3 mpg. I was shocked. My speed, all the way down the Parks Highway was no faster than 54 mph. Other people got tickets along the way. I waved.

It was the first time I really tried to get decent mileage. Throttle position was under 20% for most of the trip. And I switched all my fluids, transfer case, transmission and differentials to synthetic oils. I don't know if I'll be able to duplicate this success this summer when I drive from Seattle to Denver empty. I'll let you know.

 

Toledo OH to Binghamton NY (500 miles)... got 24mpg. Alot of the trip was at around 75mph. Think rpms for most of trip were around 2500. Tires are 265/65/17 grand trek set at 37psi. Just changed diff fluids, 35k miles on 30k plugs. Custom bed cover...

 

I get 20-22 combined hwy/city with summer mix. Just hwy is 22-24. I have 2.5" lift and 32s. The 5VZ gets decent mileage IMO. Just my $.02.

 

I just got 21.6 on my last tank, 1997 v6 x-cab, regular boring gas.

How are you getting this kind of gas mileage out these truck? I can get about 16-17 city, that is keeping 2000 RPMs or lower, on long road trips have gotten close to 19. My truck is stock, I took off the 285 tires, to improve the gas mileage it did a little, but still not as good as you all are getting. I would appreciate any helpful hints you all have.

There's no magic secret I could tell you. I avg about 20 mpg per tank, and all I can say is that my truck has been extremely well-cared for, but that's it. I run 265/75/16 Hankook DynaPro ATM tires.

Other than the tires that are bigger than stock, my engine has not been touched with a modification, and I run conventional oil.

 

Part of the difference too may be that you have an automatic. A manual usuallys gets slightly better mileage.
