Looking at a 98 Tacoma

Hey guys this is my first post. I'm looking at a 98 with 169,000 miles. i know its a lot but if i can get it at the right price i figure its worth it. ive been looking for a while and havent been able to find what im looking for. how many miles do you think i can get out of this truck? and what do you think it should go for? thanks!

 

I think you should be able to get at least 250k from that truck. My friend has a 94 with 220k and still going strong. For the price i would think it could be anywhere from 5-8k? Not really sure about that though. I'm looking to get a 94 with 140k miles so i'm kinda in the same boat as you .

I think that if the vehicle was properly maintained, that it could still have a lot of life left in it. It is pretty hard to determine value/longevity when mileage is the only known factor.

I have seen trucks with 50,000 miles that were ready for the scrap heap, and trucks with 300,000 miles that ran very well.

Also, is it 2wd or a 4x4. Standard cab or extended, 4 cylinder or 6. All of these go in the determination of value.

FWIW, I have every service record from the maintenance of my truck, either dealer, other shop, or me, since purchased new in April 2002. Ask the current owner what type of records they have, and the answer will be a good indication if it was maintained well.

 

I have had a boat load of these trucks....Current one is a 1998 with about 151K on the clock. Runs like a champ, no real mechanical issues ever. By the time I got to my 3rd one, it started to rubb off on my sister so she bought a new 1986. Took that little 9201A model to 375K+ before giving it to her father in law, then he gave it to one of his grandsons who took it well beyond 400K!!

BTW, what are they asking for the truck?

 

Currently have 218,000 miles on a '97 2.7L 5 speed regular cab. Bought at 171,000 runs like a champ. Just make sure you check the frame out very well.

 

There was a major recall/decommission of numberous Taco 95-00's.... I owned a 98' myself, that Toyota ended up buying back from me so that it could go to the scrap yard. I could stick my hands through the frame because of the huge holes in it. The catch to the buy back was that the vehicle could never have been wrecked to where it had a salvaged title or if it was border line to being totaled. Check the frame carefully.

 

Buy it if price is right, probably nothing over $7500. Mine has 181,900 and runs like a top just put 250 miles on it today in the hills.
