I'm new to Taco World, and I am looking for a 1st Gen as my daily driver. I really don't like driving automatics, and all I can find for sell are xtracabs with a manual trans. Did Toyota ever make a 4 door Tacoma with a manual transmission? Would really like a V6 with a manual trans.

No, Toyota did not make any 4 door 1st gen tacomas with a manual transmission. That's what I was really looking for myself when I was looking for a tacoma but settled with the xtra cab and the manual.

They do not exist. Whatever truck you saw was swapped to a manual transmission.

Even the rare 4 door 4 cylinders came with an auto.

01 SR: Double Cab conversion, S/C, lowered.
2001 - 2004 Double Cabs (both 4X4 and PreRunners) were 100% automatics from the factory. No manual transmission was ever offered on 1st gen DC's.

(NOTE: I've got a full set of 2001 - 2004 factory spec documentation to prove it.)

Over the years, there've been a number of manual transmission transplants into stock 1st gen Double Cabs. This is a do-able but fairly elaborate project, because it also involves re-wiring and an ECM transplant.

The alternative approach is to transplant a Double Cab body onto a same-generation ('01-'04) XtraCab chassis with a manual transmission. In some ways, this approach is easier (more busy work, but less hassling with wiring, etc.).
