im still confused about what i need to buy as far as the breather that comes out in the gas door compartment... some people say different things. so someone that knows what they are talking about can you please explain to me what i need to get to do this mod and why?

It's pretty easy. The "why" is so when you ford across water deeper than the top of your rear diff...water doesn't enter the rear diff.

What I meant was what type of breather and why do I use that breather? People are arguing about getting some 2 way breather or something. Why can I not use the stock breather? What's wrong with that one?

The stock breather is threaded on the side that goes into your diff. Trying to push the tubing and secure it to the threads is not a good option. Thats why people buy a new breather that's barbed as opposed to threaded. Make sense?


Look at the top two breathers in the pic below. The one to the right is what is in your diff stock and the left is the one people buy to put in its place (usually in the gas filler pocket)

Does anyone know for sure if the front differential breather is two-way for a 1st gen tacoma (Part NO.: 90930-03136)?

Has anyone had temporary leaky seals? I was down in the heat when my passanger rear seal started to leak. I limped it back up to the mountains, checking frequently along the way to see if it was still leaking and it had stopped early on. At this point I am going to assume it was due to a dirty breather and keep an eye on it. Or should I pull it and just replace the seals/bearings?

Questions for 1st gens:

1. Do you have to mount the new two-way breather vertically for it to work?

2. If you mounted it behind the gas filler door, have you noticed water getting in from washings/rain/snow melt/etc? Have you noticed any dust/dirt getting in?

3. Is there an alternative place to mount the new breather, eg rear storage cubby?

4. How much extra slack in the tubing do you think I need if I'm installing Dakar leafs + AAL in the rear?

On my 02 I ran it up and put the nipple of the little inline filter through a hole in the sheet metal that runs across the under side of the bed, as in it goes across the bed wheel to wheel. That may be confusing but if you get under there and look under the bed, above the axle you'll see it.

The keep it from coming out of the hole I took a 3-4" piece of the same tubing I used from the diff to the breather filter and pushed it over the exposed nipple on the filter. I don't go mudding or cross water that deep as it would already be flooding the cab.

The reason I did this mod to begin with was my rear axle seal leak. Since this mid, my leak has slowed to almost nothing (yes it's topped off with gear oil).

All of these concerns also occur 8' of hose, fittings, hose clamps, etc. No need to run all of that with a simple expansion/accordion style setup like this.

True, you can still get a branch above the axle and rip out the line but overall, a reinforced fuel line will be more durable that plastic with flex (fatigue) lines. Also, and I don't know the answer to this, is that a closed system will only allow a specific amount of volume expansion. If you're driving through temperature extremes or significant elevation changes, you could overwhelm the expansion chamber.

Its a simple expansion chamber. Like a balloon, as the axle heats up, expanding gases will expand the chamber. As the chamber cools, the chamber will contract.

Ahhhh I see. I kinda figured but didn't want to assume. Thank you.

My first thought was "What if the rear end emits more pressure than the chamber can hold?"

Seems the best way would be to mimic the original design of venting off the pressure, only make it more efficient.
