Honestly I know you love your truck but just sell it an buy a 4x4. Doing the conversion is going to put the resale in the toilet and a headache. Makes no sense to convert a Prerunner. Who's got that time on their hands? I wouldn't even consider buying a Prerunner converted unless is what almost free

Well if you can take your time and find all your parts for very good prices than it is very much worth it :D I'm wanting to convert mine, but not to CV axle I want a straight axle I think :) Whats more fulfilling than giving your love 4 spinnin wheels, its like reversing a vasectomy :p

I hear you man. I do get it but why? Just sell and buy a 4x4. Maybe when I was younger I would feel different but the thought of laying in my driveway for weeks converting when I need my truck for Monday to go to work.....ugh  Ain't worth it

Because I bought my Prerunner, swapped it to 4x4 and still ended up being $2,000 cheaper than if I had bought a 4x4 with the same mileage, etc...

That's great. Aint factory though and I'm sure you could have found a 4x4 cheaper.

I believe alove0750's 4x4 swap is alittle more bulletproof than the factories. mI understand what your feeling though about working your ass off on it and not having the truck for a week or 2, but I think its well worth it, it'll be like a new truck almost when your done! :) I just like to do my own work, so its cool to do new things and learn stuff :D

When I bought my truck I was looking for something in the $10,000 price range, which put me into the 96-98 Tacoma range. I got my truck in 2006, it was an 01 with 50,000 miles and in great shape for $11,000. 4x4's with the same mileage, year, etc were going for $16,000 and up in my area.

It may not be "factory", but I would dare someone to look at it and say it isn't. All the interior matches perfect (autotrader.com to get the vin # to order the correct color/style console). Plus it was an 01 with manual hubs (stopped offering them in 2000) so I was able to put a locker in the front. It was also fun talking crap about how my Prerunner/2wd would do anything someone elses 4x4 would and then some

    It's a 4runner. Project who run it
I am parting out a perfect truck for this conversion.
I still have all the parts someone would need to covert from 2wd to 4x4 minus the transmission mount fabwork

Transmission mounts are the same. If it is an A340(-)
    (E) = 2wd (F) = 4x4

I've heard people say that a 4runner tranny will work but there's some extra work involved, can anyone tell me what that is? I found a 4runner tranny for sale locally for a good price.

It is true... that is an issue I ran into. The speed sensor on the 4runners run off the front ABS, where the Tacoma's is in the back of the transfercase. Luckily there is a place for the sensor, it is just blocked off. I can get you part numbers for the speed sensor needed and you will have to get a speedometer gear from your dealer. Simple fix

That would be great! how much do those parts run? And correct me if my thinking is flawed but couldn't I use the parts that are on my stock tranny?

You can also use your current tranny if your switch out the output shaft, which requires you to take the pan and pump housing off and stuff :(

Nah, the sensor isn't the right size/length

I think you will have around $130-$150 in the sensor and gear.

I am running a 4runner trans in mine now. What have you heard? I am running a 99 runner trans and the only thing i had to do was to change the park/neutral safety switch on the trans with the one off of my old 02 trans. I just extended the wiring for the speed sensor to reach the sensor in the transfer case, that came with the trans. I do notice that the shift points are a little different but nothing to write home about

Not every one, you need to look at the transfer case before you buy it and verify that there is a speed sensor installed.

So is that just a different method of making the tranny work?

the trans works just as the tacoma trans, the safety switch had to be changed due to the connector.
