Maybe the 285 aren't worth the hassle of trying to make them fit.

Are you happy with the 265/75/16? Any rubbing with those?

Very happy with the 265's, though sometimes I do miss the 285's for offroad capability and looks. However when I fill up I remember my love-hate relationship with the 285's! Zero rub with 265's. Good luck, show pics!

Yeah and with continually rising gas prices it might be smart to stick with a 265. That way no spacers or rubbing issues.

I've got 285/75's. Hell I still rub with 4" BS a tiny bit on the drivers side frame. Has to be full lock left turn and a very hard compression, but it rubs. Only the frame and not enough for me to give a shit. Small price to pay for the size I wanted. I also have a shiney spot on my frame now. :D

Is it necessary to remove the front mudflaps to fit 285's? I see that the pinch weld sticks past the mudflap and would like to keep the mudflap it if at all possible.

    Thanks

I had to take mine off. After doing the pinchweld mod, the mounting in the middle for my mudflaps wouldn't work anymore. Also I think they would hit the tire anyway.

Think I am going to get Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10 LT285/75R16 and run a 1/4 inch spacers in the front to pull it out from the UCA. Making the backspacing roughly 4.375". Any thoughts on using just a 1/4 inch spacer since I have have the Light Racing UCA?

    Thanks

The UCA is not really the main rubbing problem here. You can clear an aftermarket UCA with a 285 on a rim with 5" BS (I know for fact...took the 285's off my wife's runner and put them on my Tacoma to see). I see no reason why you wouldn't clear a factory UCA with a 4.5 BS. You're going to rub on the frame though.

I would advise against the 1/4" spacer on stock wheels for 2 reasons.
    1) The lugs on the Toyotas are short. You need all the thread you can for your wheels.
    2) Spacers are designed for LUG centric applicaitons. Most factory wheels are HUB centric (not lug centric). If you put a 1/4 space in between, your wheel is no longer centered as the wheel will not come in contact with the hub...at all. And you can't use lug centric lug nuts on a hub centric wheel. If you do this, don't be suprised to see your wheel pass you up on the freeway.

Lastly, like i said before, I have a 4" BS and I still rub wheen wheeling. If you want I can take a picture and show you the shiney spot.

I just put some 285/75/16 with 16x8 and 4.5" BS and they rub on the frame at full lock. I would get a rim with a smaller bs and you wont have any problems. Dont get spacers if you dont need to, they fuck up your angles and are hard on your parts. Just take a look at your local junkyard and find some cheap rims. Thats what im planning on doing.

That's exactly what I have now, and at stock height with stick wheels, it rubbed a bit on the rear side of the frame at full lock (to both sides) just on the street.

A year ago I put 5100's on the middle setting and it hasn't rubbed since.

Now I'm planning on 285's and going to 2.5" on the front. It might rub a bit, but like others have said, hammer the pinch weld, and you should be fine, but it still might rub during articulation.

Just a FYI a 285/75/16 WILL NOT fit on a stock 04 Tacoma with the stock wheel and UCA without wheel spacers! I know the bush is being beat around here a little but I tried it today and it hits the stock UCA.
Just wanted to make it clear for anyone that was not sure.

I have a 2012 Toyota Tacoma and I have a 4”lift on it now. I bought pro comp steel wheels 16x10 that have 4”bs and -38mm offset. But I can not mount up because they hit the caliper. So any suggestions on a fix or even another steel wheel that I could get that would work with 285/75/16 mud terrain tires???

MagnaFlow off-road exhaust, OME 885 lift w/ rear full Dakar leaf pack, anytime foglight mod and Contura V switch, aFe Pro-Dry S filter, color-matched grill, Yakima rack, ARE Z-Series shell, and probably more. Also have a 1996 regular cab DLX Tacoma and a 2014 DCLB Tacoma.
I tried so many different steelie 16s on my 2010--and only the Konig Countersteers by FN worked for me (aka cleared the caliper). I run the exact same tire size as you, and I get a little rub (OME lift, so not as much clearance as it looks like you have). Follow the link. They aren't steelies, but they have held up beautifully for me, and I take my truck offroad every day.

    Good luck!
