Simple how-to: fix that crappy door trim

This seems to be a pretty common issue on the first gens: the flipping stupid piece of trim at the bottom of your driver side window. There it is, every stinking time you get into the truck. All flaky and alligatored, "chrome" shining out from the black, uh, what is that stuff, anyway? Paint? Rubber? WTF? And if I pull this stuff off, am I going to break a bunch of little clips?

Turns out, it is an extremely thin layer of rubber on top of aluminum. In sunny, hot regions, the rubber just cooks off after about a 100k miles. Not only that, but I realized the part that wipes against the glass had also become stiff and deformed away from the glass, allowing water to get inside the outer door. Bad. Some people just take this trim off and paint it black, but that won't fix the bad seal against the window.

It is pretty damn ghetto (not that ghettos are bad). But it is an easy fix.

Here are the part numbers for the Xtra cab, anyway. About $30 from the dealer. They call it weatherstrip:

Note: others point out that you can do this without removing the mirror. I had never done this before, so I was picking it apart carefully to avoid breaking stuff.

    Anyway...enjoy.

Pop off the little piece of plastic trim next to the mirror inside the door. Use a plastic putty knife or something similar.
[EDIT: Others have said it is not necessary to remove the mirror. I removed it simply because I had not done this before and was being cautious.]
This is what it looks like behind it. You aren't going to break anything.
    Remove the mirror nuts:
Pull the mirror away to expose the front of the trim:
Grasp the weatherstrip from above and pull upward. You are popping off three white clips. You might break one if you aren't careful, but the new parts include all the clips:
    Here's another shot:
This is how the back end comes apart. The bottom piece slips into the rest of the weatherstrip:
Installation, as usual, is the reverse. Start from the back forward.

To help prevent this new rubber from going bad, I am applying 303 UV protectant on it after each wash.

    Final step, insert beer:

every 6 months or so I apply silicone on all my rubber trim parts including the weather strip. The truck is a 2004 and the rubber feels and looks brand new still. hopfully that helps others with keeping their new trim in perfect condition?
    Nice write-up!

Nice write up but it's not necessary to loosen or remove the side view mirror to install these. Simply pull the old ones off (no worrying about breaking clips as the new ones come with them) starting from the rear. Then slide the new ones on under the side view mirror, line up, & snap into place.

I have a double cab & it's the same for rear.

Local dealer wanted $34 each. Get them from an online sales dealer for $17ea. Conicelli offers free shipping on orders over $100 & is where I got mine.

I just replaced my fronts this morning. It's really easy. Thanks to OP for the how-to. I didn't need to loosen the mirror, just slide the trim under it.
