Originally, I think I posted that it was during coasting...as soon as I take the foot off. But now it seems (well, the last time it happened....) like it's both during and after acceleration.

As mentioned, I haven't heard it in a few weeks....but I'm sure now that I say that I will hear it within a few hours.

And yeah! It sounds horrible, huh?? I get weird looks from people in the other lanes.

Yeah mine is usually when coasting and off the gas but iv heard it while on the gas also... It's insanely irritating and hard to pinpoint. I'll have to check the heat shields to but I doubt it's that on mine because I have a body lift and my heat shield is 3 inches above the exhaust so what can it be rattling against??

Also iv banged on my cats and there solid sounding.

But iv banged on my exhaust slip joint and that does kind if reproduce the squeak/rattle I hear so I think I'm gonna try and work on that if the heat shield is good

Anyone check to see if your skid plates have come loose? If the prerunners have them. I don't know never looked under one I just assumed they had them like the 4x4's.

Hey my 2 cents- I had a rattle (metal on metal) at low rpm's (dont know for sure the numbers anymore). It got progressively worst (lasted over a longer rpm range). Usually went away with acceleration and high rpms. Never heard it at speeds over 10-15 mph. Eventually i heard it at 20 mph+ and it sounded like a fan and I had no power. It was the cat falling apart inside (metal on metal sound) then the cat broke into pieces inside (fan sound). Needed new cat.

My new problem is- rattle metal on metal or spoons banging each other low pitch sound. it happens louder or more often when engine is cold and when letting off the gas while in gear. I think it happens only in the first few gears (but not sure).

I read this blog. Going to try everything everyone mentioned tomorrow. Got a 2500 mile trip in 2 days!!!

Tap on stuff until you can duplicate it. Rattles are generally pretty easy to locate.

Did you find out the issue? Mine is doing the same, went under and checked all my exhaust and heat shields, sounds like it's from the fan or top of the engine, quite loud when I step on it

My 2000 did this. Rattled under acceleration at certain RPMs and while braking, coasting...I replaced the entire exhaust system only to hear the same noise once I got it back together. I was 100% sure it was one of the cats. Turns out it was the double cardan joint on driveshaft. Took it to specialty drivetrain shop and they figured it out for roughly $400 I believe.

Happened in my 96 Tacoma. Trust me when I say numerous home mechanics and myself tapped and dug around looking for it. Nothing.

Took it to Toyota dealership. They thought it might be coming from the driver side front diff/CV/drive shaft. Wanted to pull it all apart. Once they gave me the estimate for cost I told them I will live with it.
Even though I was thinking I changed out that axle before and the noise never changed so...

    I think rattle was between 2000-2800 RPM's.
