Sluggish engine.

ok so i got my taco when i was about 17years old. i drove the shit out of that truck, raced the engine, drove off road, burn outs. all the shit young kids do now days. but i grew out of that pretty quick. i usually keep up on the oil and sparks plug changes but other then that i havent changed much. my question is whats the best thing to do to regain that factory power. i feel like the power it used to have when i got it is totally not there anymore. if someone could give me some pointers on what to check and what to maybe replace that would be awesome. thanks for the help!

oh and my check engine light came on for about a day and a half, and now it just shut off, whats that about?

 

yeah the wires might be old but the plugs are good. will the code come up even tho the check engine light is off now. the air filter looks good, i always keep it clean.

EDIT. how would i inspect the cats? just take'em off and take a peak?

 

maybe ur just getting older now and realizing ur trucks not as fast as you once thought it was. lol

If your CEL is popping up and your gas mileage has gone down, it may be your upstream o2 sensor could be going on you.

I agree with this post. I have been around vehicles many years, and I never felt like the Tacoma was a hot rod. Great trucks, but not something I would take to the drag strip.

With that being said, give your truck some TLC. Lots of little things you can do to her. Clean the MAF sensor, plugs, wires, and find the culprit of the CEL.

 

well im 20 now so i grew out of that messing around in my truck stage. i just feel like there is power loss in the engine. i do need to clean the MAF sensor tho. and change the plug wires. yeah i need to scan it but i dont know anyone who has one. doesnt auto zone do it??

 

About any auto parts store will do it for free

 

Fuel filter makes a world of a difference in power besides cleaning the throttle body.Maybe Just Maybe the cat might be slightly clogged also a sluggish Gremlin that could cause power lost symptoms.
