I just bought a 1996 manual 6 cycl tacoma with 228,000 miles. It runs like a champ. No noticeable problem. A couple aesthetic things of course. However, I was wondering if anyone suggested typical maintenance to perform. I was going to change most of the fluids and maybe change the thermostat. Any ideas?

I'd look into replacing ALL of the coolant hoses before they fail. Otherwise one fails, you ifx it, another one fails, you fix it, etc. Nobody ever replaces the small misc ones until they fail.

Another thing to look at would be the ball joints, mine failed at 230k or so on the passenger side, then around 260k on drivers side. Both time they cut loose I was up at our property and both time the frontend just hit the dirt. The passenger side ones caught me by surpised, no noise, squeaking just driving along and frontend hit the ground....driver side I knew was going bad but kept driving it cuz at that time I was driving on ranch only, not on the road with it.
