a few new owner questions

i just recently got a 04 taco dbl cab 4x4 trd off-road edition, (my fathers day present from my wife, best wife in the world!) and have a few questions.

1st, i wanna do the easiest basic lift to run a slightly bigger tire and give the truck a more burly look, nothing major. searching this site has me leaning to the bilstein lift, biltseins on all 4 corners with a AAL for the rear...done. the front bilstein shocks are adjustable in 3 different lift settings if i remember but im curious how they adjust. from pics i havent seen any adjustment knobs so i dont know how they adjust exactly. also they have a heavy duty version of the 5100 so i wasnt sure which model to get. i want to set the shock at the 2.75 setting so what AAL would be the best choice for me? or basically, what AAL do i want to run with the front bilsteins on 2.75 setting to make the truck look good and level.

2nd, i wanna change my rim/tire combo. i wanna run some basic black steelies. so i think the stock rims on my truck are 16x7s. with the lift i want, what size rims would be best for me. do i run 15x7 since my stock rims are x7 or can i run a 15x8 rim without any problems. so basically i want a 15" rim, not sure what width i can run without any rubbing issues and im not looking to trim anything. also curious what backspacing i need. as for tires i was looking at getting 31" tires but not sure if 32's are possible for what im looking for.

any imput would be much appreciated, also this site is awesome. ive already did the deckplate mod and the fog light mod and im about to do the grey wire. couldnt do it without this site, thanks for all the those who contribute to this site. im totally new to trucks but ive been building and drifting ae86's (85-87 corolla gts) for over 10 years now and do all my own wrenching. wanna start learning the ins and outs of my truck now since i cant leave any of my cars in stock form.

 

Do you still have stock leafs?...if they are sagged you might want to consider new leaf packs instead of the AAL....might be better in the long run...

 

5100s are adjustable but only by where the bottom plate is. They have a ring and you can move it to 0'' 1.somthing'' and 2.5''

If you look at the bottom shock toward the left you can see the notches im looking at. Most ppl dont really use the stock coils tho, a lot go with OME 881 or Eibach coils with the billys set to 0.


i agree with leaf pack idea too, but if you dont want/need it id say a 2'' AAL

31'' tires fit on a stock yotas easily. Id definatlly go strat for 32x11.5s or even 33s, 32s are a lil easier on gas tho. Just becareful with the rim choice and back spacing, i believe you need 4.5'' of back spacing. 15'' rims are a smart choice IMO, cheaper tires If spacers are need to stop rubbin go with spidertraxx or allpros in 1.25'' or 1.5''.

thanks for the quick replies guys. the truck is stock and the suspension is in great shape, no sagging at all. so a good set up is bilstein shocks on all 4 corners with fronts set to 0, ome or eibach springs for the front and a 2" AAL. and with this setup running 32" tires on 15x8 with 4.5 backspacing will be no problem and wont require any other parts correct? sorry for the newbie questions but like i said i have no experience with these trucks and i want to get it right the first time.

 

Well you might need new longer Ubolts...maybe. Also maybe a longer rear brake line. The OME will look better with the 2'' AAL or a 1.5'' AAL. Eibachs lift ALOT! like 3''+ easily, i just put some in and i have wheelers 5pk leafs that give a 1.5'' lift and 1.5'' shackles...and my front is still higher then the rear. OME supposedly ride better too...but i can't confirm that as i have only had some old Rancho coils and my new Eibachs.

Also new front bushing never hurts.

and your MIGHT still have to do a wee bit of trimming..but unlikely. And again...wheel spacers MIGHT be needed...it all depends man, every situation is a tiny bit different, but id say with that stuff youd be good to go!

 

im in the same boat as this guy. looking to lift my 03 prerunner 3 inches all around. and i have stock 16" wheels. can i fit bigger tires with these stock wheels after the lift? such as 32 or 33s?

You maybe able to fit some "32s" without doing any lift at all. And generally, Most "33s" will require at least 3"s of lift plus some modification the the front wheel well to be able to clear without any rubbing. Also, most 33s require a wider wheel than the stock ones.

235/85-16 and 265/75-16 are examples of tires that wil fit on the stock, 7" wide, alloy wheels. These two tire sizes are considered 32" tires.
