replacing my brakes and I noticed there are a few shims on the old pads - the new pads just have one shim.

Yay or nay, how many to use for each pad?

I got new Napa pads which have one shim on it, the old ones had two....

Honestly, unless the shims are rivited on the new pads, I would take them off. Most of the time they just make noise.

the shims are onthere to prevent noise by isolating the pads from the piston. id reuse them since they are not a wear item and dont wear out.

as far as buying stock pads. they are made by the lowest bidder and if you upgrade to the more expensive pads the truck will stop better and they will last longer.

its like saying if your shocks go bad just replace them from the dealer, not a good idea as there are far better options.

aftermarket pads- this is true, last longer, more durable, better stopping power. but way noisey due to material. usually made with harder compounds/metallic pads causing rotors to glaze over prematurely n some times create heavy grooves in them. imo.

the top grade ones are kevlar. they are tough, dont heat up, dont glaze easy and wont hurt the rotors.

using the shims will keep em quiet

i use kevlar pads on all my 3/4 ton trucks that i use for hauling. i will get them for the taco too when i need them

Insert big lebowski Walter confusion. "huh? What the Fu*k..I'm not..." I didn't know if you were speaking against using napa pads and instead advocating stock pads. :)
