Timing belt and water pump?

So I just got my 97 tacoma 4x4 on tuesday and I am the 3rd owner. The 2nd owner has had it since 26,000 miles and now it has 144,000. He has never done the timing belt or water pump yet. The truck has the 3.4 v6. My question is should I try to do this myself or have a shop do it? I got a quote from a shop down here that I am good friends with the owner for 225.00 labor and I bring him the parts. Does this sound like a good price to you guys? Bring on all thoughts and comments.

 

My wife just had the water pump and timing belt done on her 2002 4runner. Same motor. Bill was around 850 at the stealership. If you can get it cheaper, go for it.

 

My 98 4runner (same motor) cost 700 at the dealer, I say you got a better deal

I would almost vote for do it yourself theres a write up on it I think its a 4x4wire.com and it is step by step and if you have a little bit of mechanical know how its not to bad of a weekend job. But what ever you do get it done lol its supposed to be done around 90k so id say your a little bit over lol

 

$225 isn't a bad price for labor. The water pump itself costs under $100 and timing belt would be cheap also. So, you're talking under $500 to have it done.

But you could try to do it yourself.

My husband and I changed the water pump on our 96. We didn't do the timing belt because it was just done at the Saturn dealer when we bought the truck (was part of the sale and they refused to do the water pump).

Thanks everyone!! I found the water pump in town with a lifetime warranty for 94.00 and the timing belt for 38.00. I think I'm gonna let the shop do it just to be on the safe side. I guess from the sounds of it 225.00 plus parts is a pretty good deal.
