my GF made the mistake of calling my truck "old" one day.... I set her straight. But before that, i had never considered my truck "old". It looks and feels pretty young.

I have known a few people with 3rd gen 4runners that know nothing about cars and just take their 4runner to Jiffy Lube every now and then. The 4runners always seem to run perfect with very little attention paid to them. I believe they are some of the best vehicles that Toyota ever made. The first gen Tacoma is close, but it was made in the US, not in Japan like the 4Runner. That does seem to make a difference.

My only reservation about buying a first gen Taco would be frame rust, if you live where that is an issue. I wouldn't think twice about the 4runner.

I bought a 2nd gen because I like the additional interior space and the rear access cab doors. It's a nice truck too, but the first gens are bombproof if they are maintained, and usually reliable even if they aren't.

That is not going to happen. Did they plummet when 2nd gens came out? No. Will they if thirds do? No. It is a different truck and they aren't made any more, and they are in high demand, becoming scarcer all the time. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

I love my 2003 DC. She's been a great truck and has been dead reliable for me the past 8 years of ownership. I look forward to another 8 years minimum before I even think about getting rid of it. Starts every time no matter what.

That being said, maybe its me getting older, but creature comfort wise, the newer trucks are a helluva lot nicer. Not comparing raw offroad ability or utility, but just small things. My mothers tacoma is really, really nice. She has a 2010 DC longbed. It has a lot of nice "extras" like the adjustability in the seats, rearview camera, etc. Power wise, I like it a lot better than mine as well. Right now, if I had to buy another tacoma, I would get a 2nd gen. Not because its more reliable, or more of a "truck", but technology wise/comfort wise it's a better vehicle.

My 1st gen is a great vehicle. Is it "nice"? No. But its a great simple vehicle with no frills or BS. So I greatly appreciate it for what it is.

so you're taking the opinion of one woman about what is 'too old'?
only you can make that decision - what defines 'old'? that's very subjective.
i found a first gen with low miles because i'm waiting until they update the truck to the point i get a new one. it's my second first gen, and they're great vehicles, very very reliable. good luck on your decision.

I love my 2nd gen,but I will be in the market to get a 1st gen access cab as soon as a get my truck paid off..It is an older car but they seem to have less problems..my brothers 2000 4runner has the same engine as the tacoma, and it runs like a charm

That ex of mine was a really weird anyway. Don't know why I went out with her. She thought her car was the best thing on the road. I pointed out a 2011 Cadillac CTS-V on the freeway and she said, "meh, my car is still better". She drove an 07 Saturn Ion.

My truck doesn't even look that great and I've had three people assume it was brand new! They're a bit flabbergasted when I tell them it's a decade old.

    None, except wheels.
Simply put the 1st generation is, and always will be a "CLASSIC". The interior while a bit cramped at times, is no frills, get it done, no bs. That's what I like about it! If I want luxury I'll buy a Cadillac.

Yep. That's the way to do it. But around here, you need some luck on your side too. One of those pops up on Craigslist, and it's spoken for in an instant.
