2004 Tacoma PreRunner TRD - Tires

I purchased my Tacoma in April 2004; it has about 45k miles and the tires look good; I believe the tires will last another year or two. The tires are 265/70/16 BF. When I make the replacement, I would like to purchase larger tires. What are the largest tires I can put on the Tacoma w/out any modifications? Thank you for your help!

 

265/75/16 in an all terrain tire is the largest size you can run on a stock setup with no modifications. That is also assuming you stick with the stock 5-star wheels.

ive got LT Michelin M/S2's i dont think the ride is too rough...

 

Wait, your truck has about 45k miles or the current set of tires do? I bought mine new in July 2004 and it has 101k. That's pretty low mileage for a 2004 if that's all yours has.

 

45k is it. I live pretty close to work. Based on the posts here, it seems I will not be able to step up the tire size unless I make a modification.

 

yes you will. a 265/75/16 is larger then what you have

 

^ Exactly, like I mentioned above 265/75/16 is a larger size tire than what you are currently running and YES you can run this size with no modifications. I am on stock ride height and this is the size I am on.

Hmm, does that mean I have to replace the spare as well? I assume I could not ride with the spare 265x70x16 without causing problems....

265/75-16 is a VERY common tire size. It is a factory tire size for many vehicles. Check out tirerack for tire options in that size.

 

You are right, got them at Walmart. Will have them installed today/tomorrow. Original BG Goodrichs had 74k tread was still ok but lots of cracks.

 

Another question, the specs for the old tires said should be inflated to 26 psi. What about these tires b/c they are a little bigger?

 

Final question, different topic. I have trouble putting fuel in my gas tank, the gas dispenser seems to think the tank is full. Therefore, it clicks off and I have to put the gas in very slowly. Any ideas?

 

your truck calls for 26psi front, 29psi rear, I drive a lot of cross country miles, have tried pumping the air up but get a rougher ride and tires wear faster in the middle...

it just plains rides better at the factory PSI IMHO, the difference in MPG with a couple of pounds extra air is negligible...

others will chime in with their experiences, I prefer smooth....
