My Fuel economy success story

After calculating my Fuel economy and discovering my 2.7L 1st Gen was only getting 14mpg in the city I had some work to do...

I discovered my Manifold was cracked...so I replaced it with an LCE header..

Cleaned the Throttle body (completely removed it to do it, more thorough)

Cleaned IAC Valve

Replaced PCV valve

Switched to synthetic motor oil

Cleaned the MAF

Removed the crappy "option racing" ebay craptastic cold air intake and re-installed the stock intake system. (as well as doing the elbow mod)

K&N drop in filter

......

And I'm up to 17mpg in the city, and that is with 33X12.5 on stock gearing!

So I'm happy..

Ouch, 14mpg is definitely bad. Replacing cracked parts and cleaning old ones did wonders (obviously!).

I get 18+mpg in my 3.7L, towing a trailer form central CA to WA and back. Granted, it's a fairly small tent trailer, running 265/75r16's...

The key is to slow down. I did 55-60 the whole way.

My truck is sippin a lot of gas nowadays too i'd like to try that too to see if i can get my gas mileage back up. Where would the IAC and PVC valves be located?

 

do you have the 2.7?

If so...

The IAC valve is on the bottom of TB held on by four philips screws. I cleaned it with some electric contact cleaner so as not to damage the valve. Take it off before you clean the TB because the crap from the TB will leak into the IAC. And be careful not to strip the four screws, they are really weak (ever take apart a carburetor??...you will know what screws I am talking about). I stripped two and has to use vice grips to remove them.

the pcv valve is on the rear right hand side (looking at the motor from the front) of the valve cover. It has a vacuum hose attatched to it. All you have to do is remove the host and pop it out of the rubber grommet in the valve cover and replace it. (like $4 at autozone)
