They are called Limited for a reason.

I guess it depends on your wheeling. I wouldn't trade my locker even for a chance at poking Jessica Alba in the ass.

Why do you keep calling it an 8.4? That axle is not an 8.4, it is a 8" V6/Turbo. The 8.4 is the 2nd gen SR5 and Sport axle, and in actuality it isn't even an 8.4 either

Know how I know your gay? I would give up the e-locker, poke her in the ass, then buy an air locker

    If you're wheeling hard, yes.

That said, if you do swap one in, be sure to also wire up some indicator of when it's engaged (I think that's covered in the write-up). That's critical. I'm not sure if sports have that dash LED or not, but you could just mount a little LED somewhere to be your indicator.

I believe it does. Why would toyota waste money on totally different dash clusters? That's neither here, nor there. If this goes through, I will be sure to do a good write up, and share it. I'm going to be balls deep in research to make sure I get it right.

Yeah...the difference in "size" is the thickness of the ring gear, not the diameter. The non-elocker units are slightly beefier, which is bass ackwards, but oh well.

What did you replace yours with when it split itself?

Another factory diff that no mods had as a spare.

Intending to re-gear soon with Nitro 4.56s, which shrink the pinion and thicken the ring gear. Should fix that issue.

Going to get the blown one rebuilt for a spare, just in case.

Sounds like a solid plan. After the swap, actually b4 the swap I'll be looking for a spare. Seems like a failsafe plan.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Why I mentioned the "install" price......how many will read your thread and "TRY" to copy your example....

You have the "Ability" to swap rears, make sure you have the right parts and even possibly take a "short cut" to "Wiring" your Locker ....

BIG PLUS here....you are doing your "Homework"...BEFORE you even start...;)

Not trying to "BUST BALLS " here......just trying to make sure EVERYONE understands what they read here is NOT 1/10 of the REALITY of actually putting this together...your time and labor PLUS knowledge can get this done!!!

Good luck and I am subb'd to watch your "build"....

Pretty good post. Also, get some sliders along with that locker before you get into too deep a trouble...

I added a trd rear out of a tacoma to my 3rd gen 4runner when I had it. Like others have said there is some drilling, tapping and cutting on the axle housing. I ended up getting the the control kit off of inchworm which worked very well. All in all it was worth the work.

Lol have you ever seen a how too on putting an ARB in?? Its not that easy. Not hard either. But compared to just swaping axles its way harder.
