Im a newb at this, but was wondering what rear locker i should go with?

i would like to be selectable and i would have a budget of about $500. i dont know how much they go for exactly

Is this for the part and installation? Will you be doing it yourself? Do you drive in snow or ice? Labor is going to eat up a bit and possibly more if you want a selectable which may require an OBA (On board air) on top of a locker.

Looks like your budget will only allow a lunchbox type locker which replaces the spider gears, those lockers are inexpensive and easy to install and should come in under budget, but I dont like them on the street because they degrade the on road performance characteristics, you get what you pay for.

500 would only be for buying it. i have no skills when it comes to working on my truck yet, but i know i would have to pay for the install wich i wouldnt mind. And one more queestion for the SoCal guys do any of you know good shops to go and get this thing installed.

So cal is a big place, I am in Vista and I can do it while you wait...I can also help you with the proper locker / LSD selection depending on what your doing with it..PM me if you would like, I have a full shop at my home..

I work from my garage, but I have tons of tools, compressor, benders, welders, and I work on about everythig under the sun, I dont want to open a shop since all the fees attached casue you to overcharge customers...

Thank you! I live just north of Vista near the mission... I will PM you about prices for things my 2010 Tacoma will need soon (front brakes if you do that incl. re-surface rotors, differential fluid change, etc.). I work in Vista a lot of the time (self employed installer/ repairs of drip irrigation & sprinkler systems).

Not really. If you go with ARB you will have onboard air but the compressor is limited in what it can do. For 2nd gens the 8.4" diff is stronger than the locking 8.0 diff so swapping to the 8.4 then going with a locker will give you a stonger diff.
