Yeah it's fine. I doubt you'd damage the roof. The window channels are probably the strongest part of the body.

im looking at going down this route as well. I decided that I dont want a swing out and i am just gonna throw my spare tire up top. Will those yakima bars work with a basket? I dont see why they wouldnt right??

Yeah I'm pretty sure they would as long as the basket has brackets to go around the bars.

@wesb1023, I was wondering about installation of the roof rack that you used off a 4Runner- was there any modification required (I.e., drilling, fabricating), or did the 4Runner rack fit perfectly onto the Tacoma channels?

I love my Yakima! Some guy came up to me at work (I run a hotdog stand) and gave me these for a steal! Roughly $30 and a hotdog.

Great looking truck, @Tucker771! Once I actually get my Tacoma, I may need something more like that than stock roof rack. I'm not sure OEM roof rack can handle some of the things I typically load up on my 4Runner (kayak, fishing equipment, etc). Do you know the weight capacity on that Yakima?

I'm not entirely sure of the weight capacity on the ones I have (I got em used) but I can tell you I've sat on one of the crossbars and I'm about 160 lbs and there was no give. I strap my 12'6" paddle board to it all the time and that weighs 50 lbs. you will have no problems with a kayak or fishing gear or even 2 kayaks and fishing gear!

    Flow master,
Hey guys here my Yakima Rack, it also comes with a basket that sits on top. It's good when I go camping since I have a short bed.✌️

Im guessing that most people like above are using the Yakima racks with whats called the "Q tower?"

Do you just buy them and call it good, or do you need certain mounting pads? Yakima do not list anything for the first gen tacos on the website.

    Flow master,
They come with rubber pads and clips that are for the Tacoma.

I have a full Yakima roof rack setup in Oakland for a 1st gen double cab (as this thread specifies). I just need to order replacement pads (Q117 clips). If anyone is interested in picking up and committing before I order pads, I will make you an amazing deal. Retail is $370 retail + tax and possible shipping. I'll give you more than 50% off.
    • Yakima 48" Load bars
    • Yakima Fairing
    • Q117 clips
    • Q Towers 4 Pack

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Best trucks on earth! When doomsday happens the entire planet will be obliterated and the only surviving remnants of human occupation on this planet will be first gen Tacomas and Toyota Pickups/Hiluxes.

Anybody with an OEM roof rack ever drop the headliner? I'd be interested in a pic to see what reinforcement they might have added.

Fellas I have a 2002 Double Cable with the factory roof rack screwed into my roof and I want it off. Does anybody have any tricks or tips besides fill the holes up with silicon and put the screws back in?

Nice truck. Wish I could find a rack like that for my xtra cab.
Beautiful dog. I grew up with a golden. Got him when I was 10, lived until I was 23. My daughter played with him his last 2 yrs. Had another that passed several years ago at 12 yrs old (cancer). Looked just like yours. His name was Winston, but people called him Big Red.
