4X4 Guide or Sticky?

Is there a guide or sticky or good post that explains best practices to operate 4x4 on a 1st gen tacoma.. i just dont wanna mess anything up

 

put it in neutral or park. Or disengage the clutch. Pull down the lever to 4wd..drive and have fun.

 

i dont have the owners manual

 

what about 4x4 lo or hi? same difference.. thought u can only go 5mph for hi

nah manual says like 55mhp for 4wd hi and i have been as high as 4th gear in lo so like 20ish i think

 

since this thread is here, whats the max speed in 4LO? Like blawkdawg said i have also been in 4th gear in 4lo...just wondering if that would cause any damage? Wish I had an owners manual for my 97.

The manual posted above also says that 4HI can be used on wet roads...I thought 4wd on the road was a huge no-no unless there is snow/ice?

 

yea i use my 4wd in winter for snow and ice a lot. No issues here.

And i think 25mph is as fast as the Tcase will let 4lo go..don't quote me on that tho.

In all honesty tho, if i feel like i want to go faster, i just stop and put her back in 4hi. if want to go 20mph for a long period of time. If its only for a short burst, i doubt you'll hurt anything.

 

If the road is wet enough to allows tires to slip, so there isn't binding or difficulty turning, the 4WD on wet roads works... but use it only if you need the extra traction (or to keep the parts lubed for a few miles).

Low Range is a lower gear ratio for crawling with max. power/ min. speed... unless you like to red line your engine, there is a limit to how fast you can go in low range. Use it for steep, bad grades and crossing deep mud or deep snow where extra torque/ power is helpful.

 

yea i usually keep it under 20 for lo and 50 for hi.
