What oil and filter to use on 1998 2.4L

Hey all, this will be my first oil change with my new used 1998 2.4L..
I have been reading about Royal Purple; is that an option and would it make much of a difference? Also, what filter should I get?

 

What about K&N filters I have been reading about?
What makes the Toyota filter better to go with or the K&N less so?

 

I use Rotella T6 its a synthetic 5-40 oil designated for diesels, that is all I use in my vehicles (yes they are non diesel) and I change it at 5K miles, filters, I just use WIX filters and change them every oil change.

The reason I use diesel oil is that it is designed to hold up to the pressures and heat associated with Ultra High compression turbocharged vehicles, so it does VERY WELL in everything else, I have pulled motors apart after using this oil only and it showed absloutely no wear! Even the rod bearings looked reusable..

I used to help pit with a race crew that was running a TT BBC motor making 25psi and we used nothing but the T6 oil and since we tore the motor down a lot we measured wear and foud that oil to reduce the wear considerably even compared to other Sythetic oils like Mobil 1.

Everyone has opinions, but I wiill only use this oil in my vehicles.

 

Royal Purple is one of many good options, as are Mobil 1 and Amsoil. Use an OEM Toyota oil filter. (See below.)

Royal Purple is overpriced, but hey it looks cool...but for 8$ a quart or therabouts I will pass...

 

thanks for the advice and references; I ended up running to the dealer to pick up the OEM oil filter and it was only $5.86 with tax!
Now, I am still a bit confused with reading some posts in the forum elsewhere about 4bangers only using 5-20 oil or 0-20.. And the science of it is even more confusing.
If it helps, my taco has 182,000 on it and pushing.
It seems no one has one set answer.

One of the best references you can consult is your Owner's Manual. It includes Toyota's recommendations for your truck's maintenance, including oil specifications.

If you don't have a hard copy, check out the Toyota Owners' Web Site, where they're available for download. According to pg 229 (attached), the recommended oil viscosity for your truck is 5W30.

 

That is only for 2nd gens I believe.

 

Need HELP on oil filter! I just bought the Toyota oil filter per this very informed forum. $6.99 Counter guy was really useless... The one he sold me has this number,90915-YZZG2. It's short. He said this is the part number for a 98 Tacoma 2.4. Couldn't even tell me if it had a anti drain back valve.. I don't know how to post pics here or I would.. Any Ideas? I am ready at the moment to change the oil...

 

I'd take the old filter off and compare the size to the oem one.If its close i'd use the toyota one. I'll never use a fram filter again. I had a problem with one on an old jetta. The fulter collapsed inside and restricted oil flow. For the record I use Castrol 5w30 magnetec, don't know if its any better but at least my stuff is magnetic now! Mt filter choice is

I compared it and they were the same size, it was a NAPA 21348 Pro Select. I can't find a cross reference for it to any of the OEM Toyota Filters. I went ahead and used the Toyota 90915-YZZG2

 

The TOYOTA YZZD3 is all filter element. The ADV is not silicone but works better because when I remove it for an oil change the filter is still full of oil after 6 months whereas others except for Mobil1 are empty half the time. Can't beat the price either. Check out a cut-away of that WIX 51348 and the canister is only 1/2 of a filter and smaller canister at that. You get over 200 square inches of element with the Toyota.

 

The Toyota Parts counter guy said this was the Toyota Filter for my truck as well as new vehicles. I asked about a longer one and he looked at me with a blank stare...

 

I use Castrol GTX 5w-30 and a Napa gold/wix or OEM filter. Dont really think it matters as long as you buy a decent filter (not fram, stp, microguard, etc) and change every 3-5k.

 

I always get the oem toyota filters for my 2.4 in bulk on ebay (the YZZD1) that cost $3.50 a filter including a new drain bolt gasket for each filter. You can go higher to like the YZZD3, but isnt necessary for the small 2.4 engine (heck even the 3.4). G2 toyota filter works as well.

As for oil honestly any oil is fine. Whats more important is choosing conventional or synthetic. Im cheap so I use supertech oil from walmart and both the conventional and full synthetic versions seem fine.

My advice though is if you do choose to try synthetic, theres a chance your truck based on the previous wear of the engine may not work well with it. So if anything acts up on the synthetic be ready to switch it right back to conventional oil. For me when I switch a vehicle to synthetic the first time I buy both sets of oil and just return the conventional ones if I find the truck does fine with the synthetic.

Have had two 2.4L tacos (both under 150k miles) one didnt like the synthetic, the other (my current) does work with it. Have two 3.4L 4runners of which both dont like the synthetic but they were both passed 250k miles.

Bad signs of not liking the synthetic was a lot of smoke from the tail pipe and a heavy ammount of burnt smelling oil at just idle. The vehicle's engine also sounds inconsistent and seems to have more exaggerated engine shake. My previous 2.4 had all thse issues , but luckily my latest 2.4 purred pefectly fine after the switch.

 

Supertech and a fram filter work just fine in my 2.4...

 

I used 5W30 full Synthetic High Mileage (139,000) Super Tech (Walmart). I have used the Supertech for years in my Camry and Lexus, Camry has 312K and the Lexus had 188K. Thanks for the replys!

Both should be available at your local Wally World. Any synthetic oil should will do, Mobil 1, Castrol, Valvoline, etc. Royal Purple is way overrated. Maybe in a Lamborghini to give you that warm, fuzzy feeling, lol

 

Oh & that's correct, 5W-30 is the correct viscosity for your application.
