Optional Manual Trans out there?

I'm thinking that if the auto tran ever goes, knock on wood, i'll replace it with a manual. But im not a fan of a 5 speed tran that has a lower final drive gear than my 4-speed auto. I was reading toyota 4wd enthusiast and they had a build where the guy mounted a tranny from a different model after fashioning an adapter plate some some sort. Not sure if I read it right but either way... are there any other transmissions that might be compatible with the 5vz v-6? maybe one with different gear ratios, or more durability. maybe less weight so it has less of manual lean?

 

X2. Your looking for something more durable? The 5 speed tranny in these trucks are pretty damn durable.

 

What? I'm pretty sure the 5speed in these trucks are lighter than the auto...

 

From what I've read the 5th gear at 80mph on the manual is at 3k rpm. On my auto in 4th its at 2.5k. Seems a bit stupid if you think of it. Its almost like a close ratio tran. I'd rather have the 5th gear (or 6th) that holds a lower rpm at highway speed for better Mpg cruising.

 

Sure. if you have the money you can put and tranny in there ya want.

And yes, autos get better hwy mileage, but we get better city usually.

and its all just an opinion really. Do you like it to be easier to crawl up stuff? or down?

also..why in the hell do you have to go 80mph anyways?? you'd get much better mileage at 70-73 with either tranny.

 

Because I want to....? Plus if the man. revs to 3k at 80 and the auto at 2.5k, it still stands to reason that the auto will rev lower at lower speeds as well. The difference just won't be as great.

I guess its cuz I have to spend a lot of time in the highway. Its about 65 % of the driving I do.

Yeah true. At least you'd be closer to the meat of the torque curve at 3k rpm for when you need to make it past that 18 wheeler asap. I'm guessing the top speed on the manual is lower than that of the auto? Not that it matters.

I was just thinking, if there is another trany out there that could be fitted with relative ease it might be interesting.

 

I doubt it. Custom bell housing and driveshaft will be needed no matter what.
